TGIF - 07/25/14 12:42 AM

Existence is random. Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long. No meaning save what we choose to impose.

Funny Ad Campaign Blunders

And Slogan Mis-translations from American Advertising Compaigns in Other Countries and languages

In Taiwan, the translation of the Pepsi slogan
Come alive with the Pepsi Generation
came out in Chinese as Pepsi will bring your
ancestors back from the grave.

When Parker Pen marketed a ballpoint pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to say It won’t leak in your pocket and embarrass you. However, the company mistakenly thought the Spanish word embarazar meant embarrass.
Instead the ads said:
It won’t leak in your pocket and make you pregnant.

Frank Perdue’s slogan It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken sounds much more interesting in Spanish. A photo of Perdue with one of his chickens appeared on billboards all over Mexico with a caption that explained:
It takes a hard man to make a chicken aroused (or)
It takes a sexually stimulated man to
make a chicken affectionate.

Coors translated its slogan, Turn it loose, into Spanish, where it was read as Suffer from diarrhea.

Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer Electrolux used the following in an American campaign:
Nothing sucks like an Electrolux.

When Braniff translated a slogan touting its upholstery,
Fly in leather, it came out in Spanish as Fly naked.

The Microsoft ad slogan, as translated into Japanese:
If you don’t know where you want to go,
we’ll make sure you get taken.

Clairol introduced the Mist Stick, a curling iron, into German only to find out that Mist is slang for (to put it delicately) manure. Not too many people had use for the Manure Stick. This is the reason why Rolls Royce decided not to call one of its models the Silver Mist – for fear of lost sales in the German-speaking world.

When Chevrolet developed the Chevy Nova, they decided to market it heavily in Mexico, where the name translates as doesn’t go. The car was later renamed Caribe.

Ford had a similar problem in Brazil when the Pinto flopped. The company found out that Pinto was Brazilian slang for tiny male genitals. Ford pried all the nameplates off and substituted Corcel, which means horse.

The name Coca-Cola in China was first rendered as something that when pronounced sounded like Coca-Cola: Ke-kou-ke-la. Unfortunately, the Coke company did not discover until after thousands of signs had been printed that the characters used meant bite the wax tadpole or female horse stuffed with wax, depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 Chinese characters and found a close phonetic equivalent, Ko-kou-ko-le, which can be loosely translated as happiness in the mouth.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan finger-lickin’ good came out in KFC’s first Chinese campaign as eat your fingers off.

An American tee-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts for the Spanish market, promoting the Pope’s visit. Instead of the desired I saw the Pope! (el Papa) Thousands of shirts proudly proclaimed in Spanish I saw the Potato! (la Papa).

Hunt-Wesson introduced its Big John products in French Canada as Gros Jos before finding out that the phrase, in slang, means big breasts. But in this case, the name problem did not seem to have a negative effect on sales.

Colgate introduced a toothpaste in France called Cue, the name of a notorious porn magazine. We know sex sells, but that might have been going a bit too far. Even for France, famous for having a more liberal attitude towards sex, nude pictures in advertising, etc.

In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.

When Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the US, with the beautiful baby on the label. Later they learned that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the label of what’s inside, since many people can’t read English.

Good morning everyboomie. welcome

Welcome to the...............................................think................Friday.

Sorry I'm still in a weekend frame of mind.

Mine is over now, so it's back to the sea of sorrow at 5am on the morrow.

Actually it's a sea of sorry ingrate customers.

Did I say that out loud?

Actually most of them are pretty ok for Okies. The others I don't have a problem with until they crawl out from under their rocks.

Have a happy TGIF everyone.

Re: TGIF - 07/25/14 05:10 PM

I have a dog. He's a black lab, Lutheran Dog and well mannered. Pastor and family had a dog and cat and Pastor accepted a call at a parish in the Cayman Islands. Their daughter took the cat but not Bud so kind hearted me said "OK". He's deaf and has cataracs and will be 12 either next month or December and has some hot spots -cancer. His chops and feet are white and right now he's in front of the floor fan cooling off. It was either put in quaranteen or put down at the vets so this way he gets a lease on life. I hope he likes it here and doesn't wander off as he doesn't see too well.

And that's my post today and have a good Friday all

Re: TGIF - 07/25/14 06:49 PM

Aww Yankee, how nice of you to adopt yet another animal needing a home and lots of love. Good for you.

Penelope arrived a bit late, but was here by 8 am and tipped over the 'grapes' dish and scattered them all over the deck. I picked them all up and tried to toss her a few, but I guess she had eaten her fill. rotfl

STILL fighting with my old and new computers. I'd switch to the new one if it wasn't so darned hard to figure out. Friend helped me again last night for about an hour and got a few more of my old reliable programs working for me. Now I can play my music, look at my pictures, and hopefully the printer is working again. So many things to do.

OLD computer (the really old one from 1995) is still having boot up problems. I finally disconnected every thing from it, changed the circuit breaker bar and rebooted. Voila. Maybe it's fixed? Ha. Don't think so. It seems to turn itself off and restart WITHOUT the screen every time I go into the control panel to add/delete programs or do a search for something. I'm avoiding it for now. Can't figure out what.

Of course now I'm thinking conspiracy theory. Windows XP no longer 'supported' and maybe they just have a something that detects all XP systems and makes them fail so we will all have to buy new computers. Just a thought. It's happened on my old working computer, then on the clean reinstall and now on this one that was working (albeit slowly) before I switched). Makes ya wonder.

Off to play with security cameras. Got last night's install redone. It was too close to my hedge and glared all night. Moved it up and hopefully it will solve the problem. Those infrared cameras are great in the dark, but bounce light off things if they are too near.

Going to climb on a long extension ladder today. Hope I don't fall off. Ugh. Hate ladders, but no other way to get to the old camera wires that are zip tied to other wires. Gonna nip this one (literally with my wire nippers). Should be fine after that. All neat and clean and nice and awesome cameras.

Re: TGIF - 07/25/14 08:49 PM

My day, oh you naughty one, was hot Close to dying-hot. Still is.....
Thought I'd cool down with an Tarantino-film.
I cant spell to whitch/wich/which, but what film should it be this time I wonder?
Jackie Brown, Sin City, or Pulp fiction?

Yes I know Sin City is not a completely Tarantino one, but it's Close enough. =)

Re: TGIF - 07/25/14 09:51 PM

Down off the ladder. All went well. Just waiting for new power supply for camera to arrive in the next few days and I'll be all done with that project. Found a 'power supply' behind my camera monitors that went to nothing. Ha. Finally located the camera it went with that was already packed away weeks ago. Cleared a lot of cables, wires, circuit breakers and all is looking neat.

Off to see if I can buy a new printer. I'm thinking my new HP hates my old Office Jet v40. Guess it is a dinosaur. All my stuff is. Just won't run my old programs. I'm hoping it will run games that I downloaded in the last few years. Haven't tried those yet. Might be in a mess there too. More to worry about.

Re: TGIF - 07/26/14 04:10 AM

Sorta, glad you were successful on the ladder!

Re: TGIF - 07/26/14 05:17 AM

Aw Ana sorry they made you sick. Hope the soup does the trick! All that is left is the peaks and Becky has informed me that I am NOT allowed on the ladder way up there. lol Silly kid. I mean, just because my mom said that I was an accident waiting to happen duh I just go and be spotter for her when she is alone at the house.

Sorta glad you and the ladder made it fine!!

Time here to call it a day. Night everybody, sleep well and pleasant dreams!!
