Because they have the money to run the ads so they are hoping you will donate to them. The large organizations are not my cup of tea and we usually change channels to not hear them, but it must work for them because they play them all day long!

I do a LOT of volunteer work for the Humane Society of Missouri at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch which is for rescued horses, pigs, goats, ducks - pretty much all farm animals. We see some of the worst horrors you can imagine. Our only source of money, other than a few grants, is donations. We get no public money at all. So, a couple of times a year they have a telethon on local TV and for the holidays we take some of our Barn Buddies (this last time was a couple of miniature horses named Teddy and Ritz) down to the station for a segment on giving Barn Buddy sponsorships as gifts.

I am not a huge fan of the Humane Society of the US or of UNICEF and do not donate to either of them. I don't watch much television, so I don't see these ads, but it would annoy me to no end if they did it constantly too. I would be very careful of donating to anything - check them out thoroughly. There are so many, many scams out there.

And to answer your question of "why," this is an example of why we ask for donations a couple of time a year. The looks on the faces of these little kids with their new pony make all the work and heartbreak worthwhile.

Drac, I'll donate happily to a local rescue before I do the large organizations that have millions of dollars and give barely nothing to the actual causes. Most local rescues need every penny they can and do it for the love, not the money.

I follow the Long Meadow ranch on your FB photos and it always make me happy to see the work they do. Truly a labor of love and thank you for donating your time to them. hearts

That's actually my point, although I didn't state it very well - the locals are the REAL ones in need. And the big ones, who knows how much of a donation actually goes where you think it will. If you want to donate, forget the big ones and go to a local shelter or something like that. And well said - the local ones do it for the love, not the money. Those of us who work in the heat and the cold as volunteers and the employees down at the Ranch definitely are doing it for love, not money!

I am about to be able to turn over the night closing to an employee in about a week. What was a temporary assist for them turned into over a year until they hired someone. It will be nice to stay home at 10:00 at night with my book in front of the fireplace when it's cold and rainy or snowing!

I support SPCA when I can although my monthly donations go to PETA and Defenders of Wildlife. Many years ago SPCA was the 1st and only humane org. around and if you berated soneone for abusing an animal you most likely got ridiculed or worse. But then you could call the SPCA and they removed the pet. You could go there and adopt a pet but of course unadoptable ones were put down.

SPCA was organized in the late 1870's by Henry Bergh was he saw how horses were so mistreated. As for rescuing, I've done alot of that. I believe Henry Bergh changed our thinking

Many thanks to all who help rescue, care for and adopt abandoned and abused animals and indigenous wildlife! It's a major labor of love. Our local Shelters are city supported by area and do their best to care for lost and unwanted animals. they also get funds by charging minimal amounts for adoption (includes spay/neuter, shots, microchip, license), and for disposal of deceased animals or for relinquishing an animal. They don't charge if it's not yours and you are turning in a stray. Unfortunately, the city funding was cut and we only have 2 'officers' who cover the entire city so it's a long wait if you don't have an emergency. I was there a few days ago looking one last time for a missing cat. Didn't find her, but oh the lovely kitties waiting for a home. I would have taken all of them if I could. Something about the look in their eyes that says, "help me, love me, take me home" that gets to me. Keep up the good work guys!!! catrub puppy

Same situation which large human rescue groups. The national Red Cross spends lots of money on other things. Local Red Cross people maybe unpaid volunteers but the national leaders are paid well. If you want to see more of your money actually go to help people give it to the Salvation Army, or local shelters or local churches.

You are so right, Guybrush - keep it local if you can.
