Derivative Markets

An easily understandable explanation of derivative markets.

Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Detroit . She realizes that virtually all of her customers are unemployed alcoholics and, as such, can no longer afford to patronize her bar.

To solve this problem, she comes up with a new marketing plan that allows her customers to drink now, but pay later. She keeps track of the drinks consumed in a ledger (thereby granting the customers loans).

Word gets around about Heidi's "drink now, pay later" marketing strategy and, as a result, increasing numbers of customers flood into Heidi's bar. Soon she has the largest sales volume for any bar in Detroit.

By providing her customers freedom from immediate payment demands, Heidi gets no resistance when, at regular intervals, she substantially increases her prices for wine and beer, the most consumed beverages. Consequently, Heidi's gross sales volume increases massively.

A young and dynamic Vice President at the local bank recognizes that these customer debts constitute valuable future assets, and increases Heidi's borrowing limit. He sees no reason for any undue concern, since he has the debts of the unemployed alcoholics as collateral.

At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert traders transform these customer loans into DRINKBONDS, ALKIBONDS and PUKEBONDS. These securities are then bundled and traded on international security markets.

Naive investors don't really understand that the securities being sold to them as AAA secured bonds are really the debts of unemployed alcoholics. Nevertheless, the bond prices continuously climb, and the securities soon become the hottest-selling items for some of the nation's leading brokerage houses.

One day, even though the bond prices are still climbing, a risk manager at the original local bank decides that the time has come to demand payment on the debts incurred by the drinkers at Heidi's bar. He so informs Heidi. Heidi then demands payment from her alcoholic patrons. But being unemployed alcoholics, they cannot pay back their drinking debts. Since Heidi cannot fulfill her loan obligations, she is forced into bankruptcy. The bar closes and her eleven employees lose their jobs.

Overnight, DRINKBONDS, ALKIBONDS and PUKEBONDS drop in price by 90%. The collapsed bond asset value destroys the bank's liquidity and prevents it from issuing new loans, thus freezing credit and economic activity in the community.

Suppliers of Heidi's bar had granted her generous payment extensions and had invested their firms' pension funds in the various BOND securities. They find they are now faced with not only having to write off her bad debt but also with losing over 90% of the presumed value of the bonds. Her wine supplier claims bankruptcy, closing the doors on a family business that had endured for three generations. Her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor, who immediately closes the local plant and lays off 150 workers.

Fortunately though, the bank, the brokerage houses, and their respective executives are saved and bailed out by a multi-billion dollar, no-strings attached cash infusion from their cronies in the Federal Government. The funds required for this bailout are obtained by new taxes levied on employed, middle-class, non-drinkers who have never been in Heidi's bar.

Super Sunday ya'll puppy

Joe, the mannequin challenge sounds right up my alley. But I think we are taking son and the kids to a movie instead.

VA son made it home at 3 this morning.

I'm ready to have a day of DVR cleaning...hope I can make that happen soon. But not today or tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be book cooking and more assaulting of Mt. St. Laundry. And must swing into Christmas mode.

Speaking of which, love the Chrismtas decorations MaG. Thanks joy

Re: Sip and Surf Sunday - 11/27/16 07:09 PM

It's been raining off and on all yesterday afternoon and night. A little more this morning. The fun part is the Outdoorises feeding table (which has a huge umbrella over it to keep the rain off).

I looked at my critter monitor during the rain and watched the Mom and kittens eating, then Ninja the remaining old feral, then the possums. BUT here's the fun part. Mom cat and the kittens took to UNDER the table to keep dry. I have a vinyl tablecloth over it, pinned around the chairs and with a nice soft kitty bed on one of the chairs. So Mom cat took all 3 kittens under the table to snuggle out of the cold and wet. It's sheltered from the wind.

So after the cat/possum routine, I see Mom cat on the exposed chair watching the possums go up and down. There are small step ladders for the possums to climb up to the table but sometimes, on the way down, they crawl under the table across the chairs. Well Mom cat wasn't having that with her litter under there. So she was GUARDING them by staying out in the rain a bit and hissing and growling at all possums who approached the table. At one point, Mom cat had a boxing battle with the BIGGEST possum I've ever seen. Mom was fierce and batted the possum in the face with both front paws. Possum to my surprise, took it and then backed off. Wow! I'd never try to fight a possum if I was a small cat.

So after the possums went away for the night, I went out and repositioned the ladders that they use to move them away from the chair that Mom cat was on. Mom watched me the whole time and after she inspected the job, and another few possums came by, she was much calmer. I guess the night went well after that. All kittens and mom were under the table, warm and dry in the morning.

Never a dull moment when you have several types of critters eating out of the same dishes. They share pretty well, but Mom cat, bless her heart, wasn't about to give up the warm dry digs she finally decided to use. This is the first time she's been under the table since her last litter and this time she's being so much more wary of everything. Good mommy!

Good mommy, indeed!

Back from the movie....Fantastic Beasts. Pretty good, thought there was a flickering light to our right that was most distracting. wave

Good evening boomies! Long day today but don't feel like I accomplished much. Our furnace went out last night so it's been a bit chilly. Hopefully it will get fixed tomorrow.

Did you all enjoy your weekend?
