Earthquakes - 09/19/17 10:37 PM

I've spent a few hours now watching coverage from lower Mexico on the latest earthquake of 7.1. Not quite 2 weeks ago, there was a stronger 8.1 quake near Mexico City. This one is near Puebla. Buildings going down, many dead today, tragic and very scary because we are having some small quakes in California. 3.4 and lower, but still they are important because the shaking in Mexico may be a pre-cursor to a big one in California. There is a cluster near Los Angeles yesterday and today. The fault line for the Mexico quakes is parallel to our San Andreas fault that runs the length of California from the gulf of Mexico up the length of California. We seem to be gearing up for a big one (as they always predict.

I'm looking around the house for things that could fall on me, and making sure that glass is away from bare feet areas. Praying that the Mexico quakes don't lead to something bigger there and here both.

Prayers for all people affected in Mexico.

I'm watching it on the news right now, Sorta. Scary stuff! Stay safe!

Let's hope this big one in Mexico has actually released some of the stresses on the fractures. Although it's just heart-breaking to see all the death and destruction down there.

They have been predicting a huge one here in Missouri for quite awhile now too. One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded was in Missouri along the New Madrid fault in 1811 and 1812 over a period of 3 weeks. I think the first one in mid-December was 7.9 and the 3rd one in January was 8.0. They said the Mississippi ran backwards.

Be safe.

I was just looking at this too. Very scary and sad all the stuff happening lately, earthquakes and hurricanes, etc.

Yep oldbroad, it seems like there are a lot of disasters lately. It's now our 'Fire Season' here in San Diego and they are warning all of us to be careful and follow fire prevention rules. It happens every year and there is always a huge fire somewhere. So far they are able to fight the ones we have, but I'm still worried about the big, dangerous ones. Life is precarious lately.

Sometimes those small and medium sized ones are a good thing. Like Drac said, could be reducing stress. It's when you don't get shakers for a long period of time, that you might need to worry. That's the case with the New Madrid that Drac also cited. There are connecting fault lines that run all the way up and under Lake Michigan. We're part of a very ancient mountain range, which means uplift. So it's been literally eons since there was any major activity here, yet the plate divisions still exist. That said, we could just have a major volcanic event at the Yellowstone Caldera, that would pretty much equal the playing field for the whole country. What was left of it anyway...

Seems like these big events hit in a few waves then everything is quiet for another decade. If you want to check out something interesting, look here USGS Earthquake Monitoring

You can pan out and see where the latest earthquakes are occurring or have occurred. Usually, when a big one happens in the Ring of Fire you'll see others all around the ring start up over time.
