When my kids were little, I would wash their stuffed animals one of these two ways:

Quote:
Valuable, vintage or delicate stuffed animals:
Surface wash with a clean damp cloth and mild soap. Air dry and gently brush or “fluff” it when dry to renew its fur.

Quote:
New or stuffed animals in overall great condition:
Stuffed animals in sound physical condition can be washed in the washing machine. Place the stuffed animal into a clean pillow case and tie a knot in the case to prevent the toy from falling out. Wash on the gentle cycle using cold water. Air dry and gently brush or “fluff” it when dry to renew its fur.

The majority of mine I threw in the wash on delicate. I never did the pillow case like Marian did, but as long as they were washed in cold, I never had trouble. Some fur you can just tell you need to just wipe off and not wash. Careful in the drier though, because some of the materials don't tolerate even the slightest of heat. I just throw in with drier balls and let them toss around a bit.

If no instructions, I think it's safest to just wash the surface. A cloth wet with a bit of soap, then plain water, then towel dry. If no tag with instructions or filling content, there's no way to know how the filling will hold up after being soaked in the washer. And it's difficult to be certain the filling will be completely dried. I use disinfecting wipes on new stuffed toys before giving to someone.
