i brought Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible: The New Classic Guide to Delicious Dishes with More Than 300 Recipes and trisha yearwood Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen: Recipes from My Family to Yours, i can not wait to tried them out. cool lab puppy paula uses lard is that okay.

Lard does give a distinctive flavor, but you can substitute Crisco if you prefer.

I would not suggest substitution for lard. There are particular characteristics it has due to its fat content. It's actually healthier than Crisco which is a hydrogenated shortening. I do use Crisco for a few things though, but in very small amounts.

Remember Paula Deen is all about the fats such as butter which I am also a big fan of! I just don't use these things very often. But when I make something calls for a true fat, I do not substitute. Now if you eat a LOT of these kinds of things, I would suggest finding an alternative. Sometimes I use olive oil which is much healthier.
