Princess Isabella - A Witch's Curse - 01/29/10 02:34 AM

Hi, everyone!

I downloaded the demo for this HOG game from Big Fish. When I launched it, I received the following message - "Couldn't find a working resolution for this PC" - and I am unable to play it in full screen mode.

I am enjoying the game enough that I'd like to buy it, but I'd like to know what the message means and if it's possible to play in full screen mode.

Thanks!

Susan

What resolution is your monitor? Are you playing it windowed?

Hi, Jenny!

My resolution is 1920x1080. After the box popped up with the "couldn't find a working resolution for this PC", the game automatically began to play in a small window and the option to play in full screen mode was grayed out.

Have you tried asking at the Big Fish game forum? They will probably be able to help also.

The game may need to play in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio rather than a widescreen ratio. You may be able to get an image the full height of the screen if your monitor or video card is able to scale the image or conserve aspect ratio.

Check your monitor and your video card settings. See if either of them have an option for scaling an image or conserving aspect ratio.

If you give me the brand and model number (not serial number) of your monitor, I'll see if I can find a manual for it online and figure out if there's an adjustment you can make that might allow the game to play close to full screen.

Hi, Cathy and Jenny!

Thanks to you both for your responses.

Cathy, no, I haven't contacted Big Fish yet, but I will if Jenny isn't able to help me. I've downloaded numerous demos and games from them and this is the first time I've ever run into a problem.

Jenny, my monitor is an LG Flatron Model No. W2442PA. I haven't made any adjustments to it at all since I received it in October because, so far, there hasn't been a need. The orientation is set to "Landscape".

I was able to play the demo without any problems in a small box, but I don't want to buy the game if I can't play it in full screen because some of the objects are difficult to spot.

You can download a pdf version of the manual from ***here*** or I've uploaded it to Sendspace if you want a direct link
http://www.sendspace.com/file/nig150
(LG named the manual Eng.pdf)

On page A9 it shows how to get a 4:3 aspect ratio using a button on the front of the monitor. This produces a 4:3 image with black filling in on the sides. This may be what the game wants.

Hi, Jenny!

Thanks so much for going to all of that trouble. I did press the "4.3 in Wide" button on the front of my monitor, and it did narrow the display with black filling in on the sides. Maybe that's what I'll need to do in order to play the game in full screen mode.

Unfortunately, time ran out on the demo so I can't test it, but maybe I'll take a chance a buy the game anyway.

Hi, Jenny!

I decided to take a chance and bought the game earlier this evening. I followed your suggestion and pressed the "4:3 Wide" button on the front of my monitor, but the "full screen" mode for the game is still disabled and I am only able to play the game in a small box.

I guess I'll contact "BigFish" Customer Service to see if they know what the problem is because someone else posted the same thing in one of the forums, but they did not receive a reply.

This is the first game I've downloaded from "BigFish" that I couldn't play in full screen mode.

Susan

Edited to add that after I emailed "BigFish", I went to "GOGii Game's" website to see if I could find a solution to my problem, and they have a demo of the game. I downloaded it and was able to play full screen mode, so it's definitely not any of my monitor or video card settings that are only allowing me to play the game I purchased from "BigFish" in a small window. I emailed the additional information to "BigFish", so I guess I'll have to wait to see what they come up with.
