Belief and Betrayal - 05/01/11 09:34 PM

I do hope someone can help me. Recently I purchased this game from The Adventure Shop and have been unable to get it to launch. I keep getting "exe has a problem etc etc" and getting no where. I have re downloaded the exe file at least 3 times. I have had very little help from TAShop and none from the developers of the game. I have the latest directx etc so am wondering what I can do now. I am running xp with a moniter res. of 1920 - I hope someone can help me. cheers, alfoil

Is that exe file the only file Adventure Shop gives you to download for this game? The downloads I've had from Adventure Shop have been between 2 and 6 files to download, depending on the game. If you only download the exe and the installer needs other files, it won't be able to install.

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/02/11 07:18 AM

We have installed all the files and we keep getting the message saying "exe has a problem and has to close" We have re downloaded the exe file about 3 times and it makes no differance. We have taken the game off the computer and are going to re download it again in total. All we get when we click on the game is a rather loud clunk noise and then the message. Looking forward to hearing from you. cheers, Alfoil

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/02/11 07:26 AM

Is the problem that you can't install the game at all?
Or is it that the game installed but won't run?

If you got the game installed, did you manage to activate it?

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/02/11 08:33 AM

The problem is it installed, activated but will not launch. cheers, Alfoil

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/02/11 07:27 PM

Have you tried playing it in compatibility mode?

Do you have it installed to My Documents or some place other than C:\Program Files

Have you tried playing it as administrator? (Right-click the exe and choose to Run As from an account with administrator privileges)

Do you have an antivirus running that might be blocking it?

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/03/11 02:17 AM

Oops, bit of a boo boo in my last post.
Everything is installed but i cant get it to start to put in the activation code.

Tried both compatibility mode and the run as..no go.

Mine is the only account on the comp with administrator privileges.

Turned off antivirus and firewall to no avail.

Sent another email to Lighthouse support, maybe they will reply to the third one?????

Asked Adventure shop to send another batch of files, maybe the exe i have is corrupt.

Just waiting for replies now, cant think of anything else.

Thank you so much for your input

Cheers

Does your computer meet the minimum requirements for the game?

I could be mistaking, but didn't lighthouse-interactive go under a couple of Years ago?

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/03/11 05:42 PM

Yes, Lighthouse Interactive did shut down in 2009.
Source:

I have this game, and on the back of the box is listed Dtp Entertainment AG - and Artematica Entertainment as well.

A search for the game on dtp entertainment found nothing: http://www.dtp-entertainment.com/en/game...p;search=Belief

A search for the game on Artematica Entertainment found this:

http://www.artematica.com/index.php?sezione=games

Jonathan Danter (belief and betrayal).

Artmeatica is the developer of the game. Here's a way to contact them:

http://www.artematica.com/index.php?sezione=contacts

Don't know if they'll answer, though...

Edit:

In the thread *jowood - game over* - I'm telling about Jowood shutting its doors. And as I understand it, Jowood is the parent company of Dreamcather, The Adventure Company, and thus also the adventure shop?

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/05/11 10:49 PM

Yes our computer does meet all the requirements, have the latest drivers etc. You were right, Artematica hasn't answered and we don't expect an answer because they just refer you back to the purchase site. Helpful isn't it! We have come to the conclusion that we have done our money. Will probably buy it from somewhere else. We certainly won't be buying anymore games from these people. Many thanks to you all for the help you have given us with this problem. Its very much appreciated, cheers, Alfoil

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/05/11 11:42 PM

Hi,
If you haven't tossed the game in the garbage, as a Last Resort, since you legaly bought the game, you could try a NoCD fix, it bypass' the need for activation code, on the negative side, the only NOCD fix available is for the German version, but hey, it is worth a try, just do a Google search:

Belief and Betrayal nocd fix

Good luck

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/06/11 06:34 AM

Hi, yes we still have the game but not downloaded, we tried your suggestion but when we googled nothing came up. Please excuse our ignorance but does nocd stand for exactly - we are assuming it stands for no cd. Is it possible that we need a specific directX9 or does the one directX 9C cover all? Thats the one we have. cheers, Theresa

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/06/11 07:09 AM

If the game asks to install DirectX9 during the game install, let it do so. It will only install the DirectX9 dlls you don't have and which the game needs. It will not replace your entire DirectX 9 install.

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/06/11 10:40 PM

Hi alfoil,
First off, definitely follow Jenny100’s advice, she is a Computer Whiz and knows her way around computers.

The No CD fix is misleading in a way because one assumes that it only works for games that come on CDs or DVDs, but they also work with downloaded games.
I am also surprised that the search came up with nothing:

http://www.google.ca/webhp?hl=en#hl=en&a...07285facdd7e541

So again, good luck in solving your problem

Hi again, we have been doing everything Jenny100 has suggested plus whatever everyone has suggested. Now that you have defined the google search we shall give it another go.Thank you for your help. Yes I think we will need your good luck wishes. cheers, Alfoil

Sorry I haven't replied before this, have been sorting out my computer which decided to throw a hissy fit. We are going to attempt to download the game through our account page at adventure shop not from the email they sent and see if that makes any differance. cheers Alfoil.

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/29/17 10:49 PM

Hello, Everyone.

I have a rather weird problem playing Belief & Betrayal. The game seems to run fine, so does the mouse. Thus, I can Save, read the Diary, use the Communicator, in short everything you can do with a mouse. But I can't seem to do anything that involves the Keyboard: use the Esc to go to the Main Menu or the Spacebar to see all the interactive areas/objects. This is really frustrating since I have to use the Windows icon on the keyboard to minimize the game, then close the game, and then re-launch it all over from the desktop icon, just to load a previous save! And not being able to use the Spacebar is quite an obstacle too, considering how many "irrelevant" objects there are in practically every chapter, makes you miss the one critical item you need!

I would really appreciate any help anyone can give, and as soon as possible, please. Thanks. smile

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/30/17 12:29 AM

My guess would be that the game isn't compatible with the driver your keyboard is using. If you're using a wireless keyboard, maybe try a USB keyboard. If you're already using a USB keyboard, maybe try an older USB keyboard. If the keyboard is plugged into a USB 3 connection, try plugging into a slower USB 2 connection.

Another possibility is that you have anti-keylogger software on your computer, maybe as part of your antivirus, and for some reason it's blocking the game from receiving keyboard input. Also, an antivirus might have blocked part of the game installation dealing with keyboard input. So maybe try uninstalling the game and add the game's installer to the antivirus' exceptions list. After installation add the game's exe file to the antivirus' exceptions list.

I don't know for sure what's causing this, but these are things to try.

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/30/17 01:55 AM

Thanks for the help, Jenny. I really appreciate it. smile

As for your suggestions now: yes, mine is a USB keyboard. I did turn off all the anti-virus components when I installed the game. In fact, for this particular game, I turned off the wifi altogether! I even play this game with wifi off, but not the antivirus. I have Nortons. I am not sure how to locate the the game's exe file, and then to add it to the Norton's exceptions...

I should also tell you that when I installed the game, it wanted to install the DirectX 9c at the end, but the installation failed. I got some message that some file wouldn't install. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game, but the same thing happened again. Currently, I have DirectX 11; but I "allow" these older games to go ahead and install their 9c, which they apparently do because they go through the whole process and then tell me it's done. As I mentioned though, this game failed to go through with that process. Could that failure be a cause of my keyboard problem somehow?

Once again, I really appreciate your prompt response. Please, help me figure it out. Thanks. smile

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/30/17 05:02 AM

Maybe this would help you figure out how to add exceptions to Norton
https://community.norton.com/en/forums/how-add-folder-exceptions

The game's exe file would be in the game folder. If you don't have viewing of file extensions enabled, you won't see the ".exe" on the end, but you can right-click the file and choose "Properties" to get the complete name.

Does the installation succeed if you don't try to install DirectX? Have you tried to download and install DirectX 9.0c from the Internet?

I think it would depend on what file or files failed to install.

If you can get the exact name of the file that won't install, maybe we can look it up.

If you haven't tried it yet, try running the installer by right-clicking the game's Setup file and choosing to "Run As Administrator."

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/30/17 06:59 AM

Thanks so much again. I really DO appreciate all your help. smile

I should tell you though, as I was waiting for your response, I installed the game on my old XP desktop, and guess what? Everything runs fine. I prefer to play on my laptop Win 7, of course, have gotten so used to it. But maybe the game is too old for it? Other games I have recently played (Next Life, Everlight, Outcry, etc.) did fine, but maybe this one is just a bit older, perhaps more complicated, for Win 7. What do you think?

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 05/31/17 01:44 AM

It's not the age of the game so much as how well it was coded.
If you check the Gameboomers ***Windows 7 and Games*** thread you'll see games a lot older than Belief and Betrayal worked in Windows 7. Belief and Betrayal is from 2007-2008. But there are games like Dark Fall: The Journal (from 2002) and even Diablo (from 1996) that worked on Windows 7.

So if Belief and Betrayal works on your XP computer, then it's certainly easier to play it on that computer than try to figure out why it isn't working in Windows 7.

Thanks for all your help once again. Sorry it took me a while to respond, but I don't get any email notifications, so I didn't know when you wrote back. smile

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 06/06/17 02:31 PM

Oh, one more thing though. I have never played Diablo, so wouldn't know anything about that. But, in all fairness, you have to admit that Belief & Betrayal is just way more advanced than Dark Fall: The Journal. As I recall, there was only one cutscene (at the end) and absolutely no use of the keyboard, in Dark Fall. In contrast, Belief & Betrayal was so much more sophisticated in Music, Storyline, Game Design, just about everything! So perhaps no comparison at all between these two games, don't you agree? smile

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 06/06/17 07:21 PM

My point was about the age of the game not making a difference in compatibility.
There are much older games than Belief and Betrayal that work correctly in Windows 7.

You mentioned that you played several other games from around the same time period as Belief and Betrayal without a problem. I don't know about Outcry, which is 1st person, but I don't see Belief and Betrayal as being any more "advanced" or "sophisticated" than Next Life or Everlight, or even older games like Keepsake or Moment of Silence.

Re: Belief and Betrayal - 06/07/17 07:29 AM

Yes, I do see what you mean. It just seemed - well, unfair - to use Dark Fall: The Journal for comparison. That game was frankly a huge disappointment to me. I never did try it on Win 7. Rather, I played it on XP, shortly after it was released; and, in spite of the fact that I had the latest and best graphic card, the graphics were so poor even on my XP. To say nothing of the storyline or game design. Next Life played the best on Win 7, but I did have crashes with Everlight. In fact, Belief & Betrayal played as well as Next Life. The only problem was that, for some reason, my keyboard would not respond, which is why I couldn't use Esc to go to the Main Menu or the Spacebar to see if I might have missed an interactive object. And I did mention that the game wanted to install its own version of DirectX but, for some reason, failed to do so. So I wonder if the problem was, not so much with the game, but that additional installation failure... What do you think?
