Screen flicker problem

Screen flicker problem - 07/09/11 04:46 AM

I have a screen flicker problem with several games:

Return to Mysterious island 2 - Minas Fate
Secrets of Da Vinci
Cleopatra A Queens Destiny

I have seen reports on the web that this is a common problem with all Kheops games and newer Nvidia drivers, although I couldn't find a real solution.

I have a new computer that I just bought in March from eCollegePC, with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, and a Nvidia GTS450 graphics card. I have installed the latest 275.33 drivers and the problem still persists.

Can anybody offer any help for this problem. I have several more Kheops games that I have not tried yet, all of which I consider to be among my favorites, and I would really like to be able to replay them.

I had the same problem with all the Kheops games that I own. I found the easiest way to remedy this is to go open the config file in each game file and change the full screen line from a 1 to a 0. It does give you a smaller screen but there is no flickering and you don't have to keep changing drivers. I hope that helps. smile

With XP you could reduce video acceleration.
But Windows 7 doesn't allow you to (unless the drivers support the feature, which is rare).

Latest drivers aren't always the best -- especially with older games for previous operating systems. There's a forum thread at ***Big Fish forums*** where they recommend older drivers from the archive for Kheops games.

jboliver,

That windowed mode worked on RTMI2 and Da Vinci. I also found that if I change the screen resolution to 1024x768 then the window is full screen size, only negligibly different from the normal fullscreen mode.

Does that windowed mode work for all the Kheops games? There are several others that are on my all-time favorites list, especially Nostradamus and Destination Treasure Island.

Jenny100,

I couldn't find the 186.20 drivers mentioned on that Big Fish forum. The oldest I found was 196.21 and they would not recognize my GTS450 card. I had to select a different series card to find them. The oldest listed for the GTS450 was 260.xx. The drivers that came on the CD with the card was 259.22, which may be the oldest drivers that will support the GTS450.

I know I had to do that for Destination Treasure Island and I just had to do it for Dracula 3. I have Nostradamus but I'm not sure if you need to change it. Well, I just tried the game and yes, you do have to change it. I would assume if you have the flicker problem with a Kheops game, that windowed mode should work. Thanks for mentioning about the 1024x768. I'm going to try that.

I found 186.08 drivers for 64-bit Windows 7 at Nvidia ***here*** (and it took quite a lot of searching). But I don't know if they'll install with a 400 series card. Some other older drivers (not the latest drivers) for the 400 series might work, but I haven't found anything on Google listing any. I'm afraid it's just driver roulette figuring out which ones might work. I don't know if Nvidia answers questions from users or not, but you might ask them which of their drivers for the Geforce 450 will work with Kheops games.

jboliver,

If you're going to do the screen resolution changing and are comfortable with a little tinkering, you might want to take a look at Multires and read about the batch file usage at the bottom of the page. I used to use this program years ago, and it still works on my Windows 7. If you're going to try it, let me know and I might have a few tips to make it easier.

Jenny100,

Thanks for all that work, but I got the same results as I did with the 196.21:

"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

I don't think that finding any old drivers that work is going to be possible. Thanks again for trying.
