Internet connecting

Internet connecting - 10/16/12 01:44 AM

I have a laptop/Windows 7/ NetGear Router/ Satellite internet

Recently after a rain storm I could not get on line. I tried everything I knew which included turning off my router & modem and restarting them numerous times.

I finally got my internet back.

Next morning, no internet, tried again, still no internet, finally did a system restore, and got my internet back.

Next day, no internet. Another system restore.

After I've done a system restore I get it back for a while but can't understand why I keep having this issue.

Could it be my router?

The error message I keep getting is about being unable to locate DNS; Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address.

Even now when I am on line I have to click on links twice because the first time it's unable to find the location. smirk

If you can think of anything I can check, please let me know.

Thanks!

I guess you could check your network connection to see if it's set to automatically pick up a DNS server from the router, or your ISP. If for some reason your router (or ISP) is not providing a DNS server, you can type in one yourself.

Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen and type in
ncpa.cpl

(that's C P L in the extension)

After entering ncpa.cpl, you should see something like ***this***, saying Local Area Connection

Right-click Local Area Connection and choose Properties

Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click the Properties button

In the lower part of the window, it will probably have the radio button next to "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically" selected. However if it isn't working right and isn't giving you a DNS server, you can type in your own. For example, you can use Google's DNS server, which is 8.8.8.8, as in ***this picture***.

Does the system restore include resetting the Satellite equipment. After a rain storm leads me to believe the trouble is more than your laptop. If everything was working correctly before the storm, then it's very possible the Satellite equipment might being having problems. If you still have trouble after Jenny's suggestions, look to your Satellite equipment, and have it checked.

And if possible, take your laptop, and router, to another location with a known good internet connection. If you still have problems then it's likely computer related. If you don't have problems then look to your Satellite.

Thanks Jenny & Homer. I tried that Jenny with no luck.

I found that when I first turn on my computer, like right now, I can get on line for about 5 to 10 minutes before I start getting the "page not found" error message. duh

I'll call my ISP and have them check out the modem I guess.

As Homer6 indicated, your problems are much more likely associated with hardware external to the house than anything inside. That's assuming the system was not hit by lightning.

The satellite dish and any external cable or amplifiers to your house should be checked for water penetration.

Your probably right. It's been a few days since the storm and things have dried out, and it seems I'm connecting ok now.

I had looked at the dish the last time, and could not see anything apparently wrong.

Guess I'll play it by ear.

Thanks for your input everyone. wave

joe, even though you didn't see any problems with the dish you might give all the cable connectors a look. If you see any discoloration then it's possible there's corrosion within that connector. If you see discoloration you can disconnect that connector and see if the central wire inside looks copper colored or a tarnished green. Copper colored is good, greenish is not, and that connector needs replaced.
