Got My New Machine - 10/25/12 02:14 AM

Hi smile
I am now speaking from my new Win7 machine and rah what a beastie !!

Still getting used to it of course .... things are SO well tucked away in Win7 .... but I'm sure I'll find them all some day wink

Mozilla Thunderbird is my new email programme and it's not too bad at all.
[Obviously I'm still in the learning curve on that, as well.]

I've not had time to try any games yet but hopefully a nice treat to come with those.

Anyway, wish me luck folks - and please be prepared for some probably very stupid questions redface

Cheers.

Good Luck Mad. I hope you enjoy your new toy!

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/25/12 02:25 AM

Fire away with questions, Mad! I always suggest that people click on Help and Support in the Start Menu and watch some of the videos and tutorials there. One of the handiest things is the "library." It keeps all your documents, photos, videos and music in one place. It should already be in your taskbar and looks like a file folder.

Have fun! Get out that Witcher game and get playing!

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/25/12 04:59 AM

No such thing as a stupid question, Mad. Just ignorant ones, which I ask often.

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/25/12 10:53 AM

Having had Win7 for about a year now I absolutely love it and find it so much more convenient than XP thumbsup I too asked (what seems now)some stupid questions at first but really I got used to it very quickly and Yes I did watch the videos several times and found them very useful.

Try using the Start Search to find things. It can find all sorts of things.

And congratulations on your new computer, Mad.

Thanks, all - and I'll bear that in mind, Jenny100 thumbsup

Not at all !! Got to replenish the savings I "stole" to pay for the new machine lol

Well I can say right away that this new machine's speed and performance is outstanding. And once I do install a game I'll certainly let you know how it goes laugh

EDIT :
Installed The Last Testament of Sherlock and it plays like a dream with beautiful graphics bravo

[I just need to find where the saved games are and I've posted separately about that.]

Cheers.

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/26/12 03:47 PM

Yes, I feel I am doing quite well now, thank you, Kaki's Sister - with normal operating stuff happydance

And with the "save game" searching I've been doing (over on the Adventure Board) I've got more acquainted with Win7 in two days than I would ever have thought possible rotfl

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/27/12 09:51 AM

Good for you Mad. I'm impressed! I'm still working on an XP computer and dread going to a new operating system. I'm getting to old to keep up with all the changes!

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/27/12 01:32 PM

Oh, I still use my XP machine every day and my Win98SE most days also !!

My "computer" room is a very tiny spare bedroom though so it's getting to be quite full now lol

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/27/12 04:58 PM

My 9 old WIN XP machine has never functioned better than it does today. It still performs like it was new. (upgraded throughout the years, it has been also). I simply refuse to thrown something old which functions quite well simply because it is outdated and old. [I had to replace my TV this summer since it really wasn't functioning properly anaymore, but then I had, the tv, since 1998!).

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/27/12 08:26 PM

I'm totally in agreement with you, Karsten! My 8 year old XP hard drive - albeit in a new case and on a new motherboard - is chugging along just fine.

I'm still using my 2003 Sony XP computer as well. It has Windows 98 on it too. I play all my old games on it. Mad I also use a spare bedroom for my computers.

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/30/12 12:27 PM

Oh, I LOVE my new machine but I certainly don't love Win7 yet !!
So much of how it works is an absolute mystery to me.

And it is SO "bossy" lol

It doesn't let me do things the way I want to do them - or put things where I want to put them ....
Who OWNS this computer ???? mad

And when I attempt to do things the way IT wants me to, I inevitably find what I've done hasn't worked and I've simply wasted hours yet again hardwall

WinXP seems much more user-friendly and much more logical to me !!
Unfortunately, though, my XP machine is nearly nine years old now and has been upgraded to its limits.
But it's still an absolutely fantastic machine bravo

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/30/12 03:55 PM

Mad, it sounds like you are fighting with your Windows 7! You can still put things exactly where you want them - I do it all the time.

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/30/12 05:09 PM

Well, I DO have a spare bed , Draclvr, which would be especially comfortable for a Win7 helper !! snicker

You taking a trip to the UK, Draclvr?

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/31/12 01:19 AM

As much as I'd love to, I'm afraid it will only be a virtual trip, Jenny!
Posted By: InlandAZ

Re: Got My New Machine - 10/31/12 01:40 AM

Sometimes, those are the best ones - a lot less stressful.
Posted By: Mad

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/01/12 11:39 AM

Yes. For Draclvr to hold on to her senses I suppose a virtual trip would be best evil
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/01/12 04:05 PM

I make a couple of virtual trips half-way across the country every week for computer assistance! What's a little trip across the pond?

We're working our way through some niggling issues. Turns out Mad has the Enterprise version of Windows 7 which is a bit different. I consider this FUN! Plus, like I tell other people, this is how I learn all kinds of new things.

Isn't the Enterprise version the same as Ultimate only with different licensing?

Ultimate seemed a lot like Professional to me, only with Bitlocker and Unix app support added.

I've actually never worked with Home, only Professional and one computer with Ultimate.

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/03/12 03:58 PM

Hey Drac, what is the difference between the Enterprise and the Home Premium?
Posted By: Jenny100

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/03/12 04:13 PM

Here's a list of differences, Flutist.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/14422-compare-windows-7-editions.html

The Wikipedia has a briefer list that's easier to read
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions

I'm surprised Mad would have Enterprise, since it's usually only used by big corporations because of the licensing.

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/03/12 04:53 PM

I was quite surprised by that also. I assume her son-in-law got it for some reason. It has features which she doesn't need and will never use.

Doesn't matter as long as it does what she needs it to. But it sounds like the default security settings may be different from Home, or maybe even Pro.

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/03/12 10:56 PM

There must be - a simple drag and drop between files doesn't work the way it does in Home or Pro.

That's odd, how does it behave?
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/04/12 03:46 AM

She said she got the "red circle." But when she right clicked and selected "add to Library" it worked. Very odd to me... I tried it 3 different ways between my operating systems and drive and drag and drop always worked.

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/04/12 04:30 AM

Was one of the libraries on a network drive maybe?

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/04/12 05:32 AM

Part of my my Son in Law's business is "computers" so, as he was building my new machine for me, I left it to him which version of Win7 he wanted to put on it.
He did say that I would probably have more than I "needed" with Enterprise but he liked it and thought I would too - eventually wink

Unfortunately, the day after he brought the machine round to me he was going on holiday so there wasn't time for him to explain much.
However, Draclvr stepped in and has been very kind !!

Through experimentation (after I couldn't get the "drag and drop" method to work for me) I have found a way to get files into a library - still using the "Snap" process.
I highlight the file I want to move (in one of the snaps) and in the appropriate library (in the other snap) click on a box at the top that says
"Include in Library".
The file then immediately appears in the library.
So. Happiness at last !! snicker

I sure can't reproduce it, but if it works don't fight it smile

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/04/12 06:16 AM

Oh, I don't fight Microsoft stuff, InlandAZ. Who knows what it might have up its sleeve to punish me ?? lol

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/04/12 03:00 PM

Yes, Inland, the file on her Windows 7 desktop with the pictures she was moving from the XP computer to the Windows 7 computer was from a Network.

Ah, that's a normal message then - It's asking if she wants to include it in the set of folders that comprises the Library.

Re: Got My New Machine - 11/04/12 04:52 PM

I got it once too, but don't remember exactly what I was doing at the time.

I'm still puzzled as to why the drag and drop didn't work between the two files.
