Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/20/13 04:40 PM

From what I have been able to research , it seems the only patches available for Alter Ego , are for the German version of the game . I think there may be a Russian or French patch as well . Out of curiosity lexxy , what video card are you utilizing ?

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/20/13 05:55 PM

If I had to guess, I'd bet you've got a Hybrid video card using Nvidia's Optimus Technology. Someone else here had the same issue, but never found a solution.

Post your video specs, we can look it up for you.

I ae a ATI Radn HD4800 series video card

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/20/13 10:20 PM

Although decent, that's a long way from a high end video card. According to these system requirements, the 4800 might not be good enough. What happens when you try to launch the game?

CPU: 2.5 GHz Single Core
RAM: 1 GB RAM
VGA: 128 MB 3D Video Card (Geforce 6600/Radeon 9600 or better)
DX: DirectX® 9.0c or higher
OS: Windows 7/Vista/XP SP 2
HDD: 3 GB free hard drive space
Sound: DirectX sound card

And don't forget the famous "run as administrator" and install it somewhere other than the program file.

I played it in Win7 but I have a ATI Radeon 5800 series card.

The Radeon HD 4 series , is now 3 generations old . If research and memory serves , the 4 series came with 512mb & 1gb or ram , so that should not be the problem . Which specific card in the Radeon 4800 series do you have ? It may be that , if Alter Ego is not the only game you are having issues with , a possible driver issue . If the only game , then a possible re install of the game , or a new install of the latest , or previous driver may help .

Are you running Windows 7, 8 or XP? The card is more than enough to handle the game.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/21/13 12:21 AM

I was over at Amazon.com and read an interesting commet from a player who was also unable to play this game. She said her video card was well above the specs and found,in her opinion, the problem was the absence of Secum 7.42 0001. I do not know what that is but this is the only game, aside from The Momet Of Silence, I have had a problem I could not resolve. Ican not justify up gradeing a video card for one game so I guess I am stuck with it.

Do you mean SecuRom , instead of "Secum" ? SecuRom , is a drm , or anti piracy "prevention" method . The discussions , and there are several , about drm have been talked about for ages , so , there's no real need to go in to that here . Is your copy of Alter Ego a seperate physical copy , download , or part of the Adventure 4 pack ?

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/21/13 02:17 AM

I am running windows 7 and it is a seperate co. I agree that there is no need to go into the drm thing I have accepted the fact that I will not be abe to play the game.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/21/13 02:39 AM

That does happen sometimes , unfortunately . Sorry to hear it is that way for you . I asked which version , because my version of the game is on the Adventure 4 pack . I played with no issues (luckily) , although I had to install through Steam . That was ok though , I have a small army of games on Steam .

Ah, I see you mentioned it in the original post. Do you have DirectX 9.0c installed? If not, you may want to peruse to Microsoft's web site and get the latest version.

Is there a demo you can try?

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/21/13 09:25 PM

Jenny100,
You are right about the demo that play w/o a problem, is that any indication that it should play well on my system?

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/21/13 10:21 PM

Yes it should, as long as it's the download version and not the SecuROM-infected disc version.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/28/13 12:47 PM

Creeping_Doom,

I am ready to cry Uncle with this game. I found a download @ Adventure Games for $6.99 and said this is it. I downloaded and that took a long time , inserted the activation code and was ready to play but alas it won't play. I know you mention you got your download @ Steam and had no problems, I wonder if I should take a chance there. I downloaded two games there and had no problems but I am out money for a box copy plus a download and still can't play it. I hate to admit it but it has become almost an obsession with me to get this game installed and not necessarily to play it just to see if I can do it. Should I take one last attempt and go to Steam?

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/28/13 04:13 PM

lexxy, before you installed this newest download, did you make sure the other download was completely uninstalled, including running a program like CCleaner on the registry to get rid of any bits left behind there?

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/29/13 02:50 AM

Draclvr,
I did install cleaner and for the LAST time I will download the game and if it does not work I will give up. I am not happy with Steam either but I guess I had better get used to this game download deal as it seems to be the future for adventure games.

Here's Part 1 of the YouTube "Let's Play Alter Ego" series that I used when I couldn't get it to play.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/29/13 04:39 AM

When you say : It won't play? What happens exactly when you go to play it, does it start up and crashes back to the Desktop, Does nothing happen at all? Do you start it up and you receive an Error message with a Code?

Just curious as to what and why you are having problems with now 2 different sources of this game.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/30/13 11:24 AM

Jenny100,
Thanks so much for that Youtube link. I really enjoy part 1 and the guy making the comments cracked me up. Starcom, to answer your question what happens is that it installs, accepts the protection codes and up comes the problem. I hit play and I get "there is a problem we will check to see if it can be resolved" and it closes out the appl. I bought the box copy, downloaded the game from two different sources and nohting works so I have acccepted that this is one game that I simply can not play and I have moved on. Some say that it may be my video card and it may well be but I am not going to up grade simply to play this game when I am having no problems running any other games including Testament Of Sherlock Holmes which I thought would be major problem.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 01/30/13 01:08 PM

Hi lexxy,
If you haven’t completely given up on the game and/or garbaged your game(s) yet and when and if you are in a “I’ll give it one last try mood” maybe just maybe the following tip or trick might help, it worked for me and a buddy of mine, we both had different problems getting the game going and it worked. Again it might not help you since you are experiencing a different problem than ours. Oh one other thing, your Video card should be good enough, it is better than my present and older laptop yet the game ran
A-OK. So below is the tip if you would like to give it a try, I hope that my instructions are clear enough since I am more a Hands on type of person and not much good at writing procedures, so here it goes:

1)Go to your Game Folder and look for a file called: “RunDev.exe” double-click on it and you should get a smaller Windows Explorer Pop-UP, the file that you are looking for is “AlterEgo.ebr, double-click on that one and the game should start and hopefully this will work for you.
2)If by luck it does work, you will have to do this every time you restart the game, so make yourself a Desktop shortcut of the RunDev.exe file and that will save you some steps.

Good luck and crossing my fingers that this will work for you.

I will give it a chance. I still have the box copy, haven't thrown it away yet. I will try it later tonight and see what happens.I will keep you posted.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 02/01/13 08:16 PM

Starcom,
I tried verything you said and it DID NOT work but that is alright. I wonder if it would alright to go to our Trading Post and give the game to some one just for the price of shipping. I am ready to toss it but maybe some one with better luck than I have had could get it to work. Thanks again for all of your help.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 02/01/13 10:37 PM

I gave my copy away, and the recipient had no problems at all playing it. I think the game just doesn't like some computers. As long as it's a boxed copy and not a download or a game that uses online activation, you can trade, sell, or give it away in the Trading Post forum.

You can always watch Mr. Flame Ifrit playing it on YouTube. There are something like 50 episodes he uploaded. He took his time.

Re: Alter Ego Question - 02/01/13 11:42 PM

Sorry to hear that lexxy, I know the feeling, there have been a few games that I had to give away because I could not get it to work and like you, I sure as Hello would not put more $$$ into my computer just for the sake of one or two games.

Take care

Jenny100,
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your finding Alter Ego @ youtube. I am on Part 9 and so far I am having a blast with the game but the comments from the guy who posted the game is so funny. Maybe it was best that I could not play it on my own system...this is so much better.
