Winrar is free to try for 40 days and $29 for a license after that. 7-Zip is free. But I should have answered your question - yes, it can.

And how goes it with the new PC, Cathy? Still loving it, I hope!

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/01/13 01:25 AM

I'm VERY confused. Winzip won't open my zip files.
I finally figured out how to get into the program files. At least I think I'll be able to put a save game in. I'm going to try 7 zip. I'll be back. I think once I get use to the new OS I'll be less nervous.
Cathy
If I install a game in Program Files (86) that's the same as 32 bit correct ? And if I install in just program Files that's the 64 bit part right ? What winrar do I get > 32 or 64 bit ? I can't figure out 7zip. At least winrar puts a short cut on my desktop.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/01/13 04:37 AM

Cathy, Have you simply tried right clicking on a file and selecting Extract All?

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/01/13 05:16 AM

Yes I have Drac. I've used winrar for over 15 years and everything has always worked. I'm a little confused again.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/01/13 05:26 AM

You open things with 7-zip by right-clicking them, and choosing to extract with 7-zip. "Extract All" usually means Windows will try to extract the zip file using the Windows extracting utility. There's a separate choice in the right-click menu for 7-zip and things 7-zip can do.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/01/13 05:26 AM

So the right click and Extract All didn't work, correct? I don't have any 7z files, I can try it on. Hopefully the free 7-Zip will work for you.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/03/13 02:41 PM

If you're running 64 bit windows then the 64bit version. The difference is to do with the winzip executable and nothing to do with the types of files your decompressing, that's irrelevant, its just a stream of numbers to winzip. It will unzip files to their original state, whether they are intended to be 64 bit or 32bit is nothing to do with winzip.

Erm I meant winrar obviously :-)

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/03/13 04:48 PM

What mj2c said - you download the version that is compatible with your operating system. In your case, that's the 64-bit version of 7Zip or winrar.

OK I got 7zip 64 and unzipped a few files and they worked. Is this OS ever different than XP.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/03/13 11:48 PM

Yep, it's different than XP - but just wait until you try Windows 8.

7 is still my favorite OS of the lot.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/04/13 12:31 AM

You think Windows 7 is different! Wait until you see Windows 8!

EDIT: How funny! I didn't see your post, Inland and we said the same thing! I'm in agreement with Windows 7.

ok
I downloaded the no cd patch for Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island, but when I try to unrar it and put it in the games directory it comes up with an error about it can't open the nfo file or something. Can someone please tell me how to do this. I installed the game and the dvd is in the drive. Do I have to take the dvd out of the drive ? I had the same problem with XP but eventually got it to work there.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/04/13 06:06 AM

1st off : Do not worry or bother with the .nfo file, it is just an information file written by the software crackers on how to install the NoCd fix, although the information is not always helpful, as there is a lot Garbage or Codes written before and after the instructions and sometimes tend to written for those who burn ISO DVDs or other stuff.

If you want to see the contents, just replace .nfo with .txt, you will get a Warning about changing the Extension, just ignore it and open the file and you will see for yourself.

As for the NO CD fix itself, I noticed that there were 2 versions re: EXE #1 and #2, you might have to try both.
In any case, just simply unzip the main.exe from the rar folder and copy it to your game directory, it should ask you to Overwrite the main.exe file that already exist.

Speaking of which, before overwriting your own main.exe file, you should copy it to a safe place in case either one does not work for you and you need the original one back without having to re-install your game.

And yes, Remove the CD, you should not need after installing the NO CD fix.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/05/13 02:19 PM

Try uninstalling the game and reinstalling into your User account's Documents folder. It looks like Windows is blocking changes in the C:\Program Files(x86) folder that the game needs to make. Windows 7 is sometimes overprotective of changes made inside the C:\Program Files folder.

You might also try changing the installer file to run with Compatibility mode set to XP. Right-click the installer file --> Properties --> Compatibility tab --> Set the dropdown box to XP, check the boxes for "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition" and save the changes. Then start the install.

Let us know if either or both of these things help with the game.

Re: WinRar and 7zip - 02/05/13 03:33 PM

Thank you Jenny
I'll let you know what happens.
Cathy

EDIT... I used your first option Jenny and the game is playing now. WooHoo !!! Would you suggest that I install all my games in the documents folder ? I've installed a few in the Program Files (x86) and they work fine. I'm so very greatful. Thank you so much.

Cathy yay

EDIT 2.... I accidently changed the no cd patch to open with adobe pdf. How do I change it back to open with 7zip ? That option isn't in the programs to open this file with. What a clutz.

I'm using Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit MaG. I tried downloading the file again, but it still comes up as a pdf file. I changed something, but I don't really know what. Could someone dl it for me and send it to me by email ? PM me and I'll let you know what the file is. It's only about 18 kb's.

Cathy

EDIT... I installed it anyway and the game is actually working.

Right-Click the file and select Properties. In the General tab look for 'Opens With', there's a button to the right of that which lets you select which program you want to open the file with.
