Regarding Webroot

Had been using Webroot for approx. 3 years. Then tried free spyware and found Webroot had missed THREE Trojans. So, when my subscription ended (early July), I changed. Uninstalled Webroot and started using my new program. However, whenever I start up my computer, I still get the message about letting WR make changes to my computer. Then, I get the "your PC is at risk" other popup. Have reported this to Webroot via uninstall prompt (why are you uninstalling); have sent them a fax and also made a phone call. Popups are still happening. Made a complaint to the BBB to which Webroot inadequately responded. Popups are still happening.

P.S. Saw what Donald wrote regarding Windows secrets, and was wondering if using Step 8 might help?

Anyway, just wanted to let people know what a headache Webroot is - and please DO NOT use them - EVER!

See if the free version of WinPatrol will help you. (I assume you use Windows.) Monitoring, Removing or Disabling Startup Programs is #1 on Bill's list of features.
Scottie, the little mascot of Winpatrol, has been running quietly in the background on my computer for years, only popping up to warn me of changes I might not want to make - for instance, when a currently installed program wants to do a Run Once to update.

I have WinPatrol Plus , which tells you in depth about almost anything on your computer.
You only pay once and all future updates are free.
But try the free version and see if it can't help you get rid of WebRoot.

I have a couple of of questions - what free spyware did you use that found 3 trojans? Are you sure they were legitimate? Were you using Webroot for your antivirus? If so, have you installed a different antivirus program? You said "free spyware." That is NOT the same as antivirus... What program is it?

Wiping free disk space has nothing to do with your question.

I love my WinPatrol Plus too - wouldn't be without it!

If this "free spyware" is legitimate, you can also simply type msconfig in a search box and in the Startup tab uncheck any references to Webroot. You will probably have to reboot.

Thank you both. Dractvr: I used Super AntiSpyware (recommended by GB). Yes, as I said, had been using Webroot Secure Anywhere for approx. 3 years. Now have paid-for Super AntiSpyware.

But, to echo Draclvr, do you have an antivirus program, Laurette?
You seriously need one if you don't.
They stop Trojans from getting to you in the first place.
Or should.
I'm using MS Security Essentials (free) right now and I'm happy with it so far.

I took a quick look at Super Anti-spyware and I don't think it is an AV.
As always, I could easily be wrong.

Unless they've made some changes, Gil is correct. SuperAntiSpyware is NOT antivirus. It's in the same league with Malwarebytes and is to be used IN CONJUNCTION WITH an antivirus program such as Webroot. In Webroot's defense, there is no such thing as an antivirus program which will get absolutely everything. You would probably have been in good shape to continue to run Webroot for antivirus and use SuperAntiSpyware Pro or Malwarebytes Pro alongside it for maximum protection.

I'm using MS Security Essentials along with Malwarebytes Pro and it's a very good combination for me.

I'm glad I asked. Had thought Super Antispyware was AV. I'll try MS Security Essentials. Thank you both for all the help.

BTW: Went to msconfig and unchecked Webroot. Haven't seen their "cute" little popups since.

Success! SuperAntiSpyware is what it says it is - anti spyware. But it's very good at what it says it does.

I too have only Malwarebytes pro.and that's it ,what should I do or get for my antivirus program..??

Deleterman, why not get the free Microsoft Security Essentials ?
It's working well for Draclvr and for me.

I don't know of any antivirus that uninstalls completely using Add/Remove Programs. They all seem to have a Removal Tool that you have to download from the manufacturer.

Webroot has a tool called WRUpgradeTool and another tool called CleanWDF. You can download them and read about how to use them on the Webroot support site here:

I'm an Escalation Engineer for Webroot, and wanted to reply to the post.

There are 3 components to the software, an Executable, a DLL, and a Driver. It sounds like in this case, an uninstall was performed, but it didn't complete properly. Likely because one of the components was in use, or a damaged database.

By disabling the WRSA.exe file using MSCONFIG you really aren't disabling the software completely. The kernel driver is still running and can prohibit software from running properly on the system. I'd recommend visiting the support site and submitting a ticket so that one of our techs can uninstall the software properly. This will prevent any further issues.

Regarding the '3' trojan's found when running super anti spyware, the Webroot software scans intelligently, that is to say it scans for active threats running on the system. It will scan all executable code and the links associated with that code (dll's, drivers, etc.) and if an item is found it will quarantine those threats.

Contrast this with a 'full' system scan performed by super anti spyware, where it scans every single file on your system including those files that cannot by their very nature contain threats. In this case it's likely that dormant and non-functioning files may be found. Without more information on the actual threats that were uncovered I couldn't say if this was the case or not.

We also offer free remote malware removal if an item is uncovered or isn't able to be removed using normal remediation. (Something that is rarely found with free solutions.)
