Game won't run because I am not "Administrator" - 10/07/13 03:37 AM

Game: The Secrets of DaVinci.
Installed: Oct 6. (purchased from Amazon)
Game installed flawlessly, but when I click on it to start, it says, "Insufficient privileges: you must be Administrator when you run this application for the first time."
I am Administrator for my own machine.
Suggestions? smile

Try right clicking the game icon and selection Run As Administrator and see what happens. You don't say what OS you have, but hopefully that might help.

I wish it were that easy, but no, that didn't do it. frown It opened that dialogue box and I clicked OK, but still get the same pop-up "Not Administrator" window when I tried to start the game.

I'm running Win7. This is a new one for me.

When you right click and select Run as Administrator are you asked for a password in the pop up window? If so, do you enter your administrator password? I realize you are the administrator/user, but if you are being asked for a password you will have to input one to be allowed access to the game.

I seem to remember, from somewhere, you can go into something and indicate who has access to what. I tried to find where I was thinking of but drew a blank. Perhaps someone who knows what I'm referring to can give explicit instructions.

No, Homer, it doesn't ask me for a password; I didn't make one. I do hope someone will be able suggest a workaround. I'm stumped.

Have you set it to run in compatibility mode?
Sometimes that helps. Test the different compatibilities if the first one doesn't work.

If you installed into C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86), it might help to uninstall and reinstall into some location in your user's personal folder, like
C:\Users\whatever-your-username-is\Documents\whatever-your-game-name-is

Installing an older application or game outside of a system folder can help when the game is trying to write files to its own folder. For backwards compatibility, Windows will divert many of these files to the VirtualStore (%LocalAppData%\VirtualStore) and treat them as if they were written in the game's folder. This fails depending on the extension as some file types are disallowed. The file write will fail for any of these types. This is why LSL5 will fail if installed inside of the %ProgramFiles% folder. This is why GOG now is using C:\GOG Games\ for its default folder.

That said, It may also be trying to write to the Registry. It should not have trouble if the entries are to be written to the HKCU (current user) with a regular account. If it needs to be written to the HKLM it may well require admin privileges, especially with UAC enabled. Of course if it needs to write to this hive, it will apply to all users, so you can log into your administrator account to run it the first time.

Another thing to consider for using the "Run as..." is that it requires that the other account not have a blank password. You can temporarily set a password for your administrator account or create a temporary admin account with a password.

One last thing to try is that writing to the registry or file in a system folder may be blocked by your AV or any anti-spyware programs you are using. If this is the case, temporarily disable any of these for first run.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I'll print them out and slog my way through until one works. smile
