Can't Highlight Anything for Deleting or Cut and Paste

Hi Inland and Jenny,

My OS is Windows 7 and I use IE 10 (although the same problem presents itself in Firefox and Chrome as well as Word and my email. I simply can't seem to highlight anything. When I attempt it I either get whole words highlighted when I'm just trying to fix typos. The word simply here is an example. I typed simoly in error. When I tried to highlight just the "O" the whole word highlighted or everything else above it. If I try to highlight a non- hyperlink URL all the text above and below highlights or I get just portions of words and can't get the whole word to highlight. Another frustrating bit is when I manage to highlight an entire line the highlighting disappears as soon as I take my finger off the left mouse button. The only way that seems to work is if I get my curser where I want to start and hold down the control key and use the arrow keys to highlight and even that isn't foolproof. Help I'm going nuts here!! Any Suggestions? Thanks in advance

No expert here but the first thing I'd do is reboot.
I have intermittent problems with my WinLiveMail in which if I try to type something in 'ahead' of something I've already typed, it makes everything after that disappear letter by letter.
Rebooting always fixes it.

This problem has ben going on awhile so rebooting is not the answer. Thanks anyway for the reply.

You might want to enable or disable "caret browsing" and see if it makes a difference

Highlighting in a web browser often doesn't work as expected. Sometimes web pages are designed so you can't highlight to copy/paste, and those webpages end up messing up other webpages you browse to. Other times it's just a poorly coded website that fouls things up. Deleting your internet cache may help, but only until you browse to another screwed up webpage.

It works somewhat Jenny, however I would still like to be able to highlight with the mouse again without having to format my drive and start from scratch.

You might try doing a Google search for something like highlighting problems in Windows 7. I got a tons of hits on it.

The mouse problems seem to be mainly with wireless mice.
New batteries might help if you have a wireless mouse.

Or just try a different mouse if you have one. I've gone back to the old wired mouses (mice?), far more reliable than the wireless to my mind, and no dead batteries to cope with.

I solved the problem with a Windows 7 Repair Install. Everything's back to normal.

Good to hear.

Just out of curiosity, what version of IE are you running. We had another member that had an issue with a repair install because the version of IE on the PC was newer than the distributed version on the disc.
