Computer Drivers - 11/22/13 06:42 PM

Is there a free drivers software program and with a free update. I see alot of free offers/programs but you have to pay for the updates to your computer.

I like he filehippo.com but does not detect drivers. Maybe it is me and I am doing something wrong.

Do you mean you are looking for something to update drivers on your computer? If so, the best place to get drivers is at the manufacturer's website. And they are always free - you should never have to pay for updated drivers. Those programs are ripoffs.

Filehippo is a download mirror for many programs. It is not driver update software.

What drivers are you trying to update? Maybe we can point you in the right direction.

Re: Computer Drivers - 11/23/13 03:12 AM

I agree the programs are ripoffs.

I did a test run on update drivers and I don't know if I need to update the drivers or not. I forgot where I can look on my computer for the current drivers info. i went to device manager but it seems that it can search the web for the driver.

I have a Gateway GM5076E that I bought at Best Buy 4 or 5 years ago. Big ripoff-no support now and since I did not buy it from Gateway directly-there is no support there. Gateway was going through the bankrupt stage. Gateway has drivers from 7-23-2010. Should there be new updated drivers??

Re: Computer Drivers - 11/23/13 03:38 AM

If your current drivers are working properly, there's no need to update them.
Usually the only drivers that need updating are the video drivers (if a game isn't working).
Or if you buy a new piece of hardware -- like a new printer or a new network card -- you may need to install new drivers for it.

Re: Computer Drivers - 11/23/13 04:52 AM

That is what starting me thinking about updating drivers - video drivers.

The game runs slowly and the Nvidia driver program update is not working to update automatically from Nvidia.com The last update I had back in May 2013 did not solve the problem on the game. I have 32-bit and should have enough memory for this game but is slowing the game down to a very slooooow crawl. I am missing something but I don't know what it is??

It would help If we knew a little something about your hardware. Can you run DXDIAG and post the results?

Click Start, Run (or press the Windows Logo Key+R) and enter DXDIAG. After it completes, post the content on the System & Display tabs.

Re: Computer Drivers - 11/23/13 06:31 PM

I forgot what the game title is. It was a game about DaVinci creations and the first moments are when a man tries out the flying machine and goes over a cliff by a tree, is saved by a net.

Here is the info - DxDiag

Re: Computer Drivers - 11/23/13 07:37 PM

This would most likely be the problem - "Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM)" The 6200 series cards have extremely low memory bandwidths.

Re: Computer Drivers - 11/24/13 12:34 AM

Thank you all for the help.

Thank you - Yes, that is the game.

If I deleted some casual games off of my hard drive, could I get enough memory back?

I like to find out if the current driver version on my computer is 307.90 or 6.14.0013.0790 or 195.36.24

Maybe the current driver did not load or work when downloaded ??

Re: Computer Drivers - 11/24/13 12:41 AM

If your extremely low end video card is the problem, reclaiming memory will not help.

The list of video system requirements indicates that 6200 video card will not support this game.

AGP/PCI-E Graphics card with : Shader Model 2, DirectX®9 compatible, - min. 128MB VRAM (ATI Radeon 9800 or NVidia GeForce 6800)

EDIT: The 307 is the most recent driver, but won't do anything to help if the video card can't run the game to begin with.

Thank you all for the help.

Is there a good video card I can replace with my specs for a low price now instead of the beginning of the year ??

Re: Computer Drivers - 11/24/13 05:24 AM

I'd hesitate to spend any money on a computer which has XP and will no longer be supported by Microsoft in April, but it's not impossible. According to the specs for this computer, it has a 400 watt power supply and the motherboard has a PCI-E slot.
