This is a weird one. If you are allowing the computer to go to sleep there are many reasons I saw on the internet. Type into Google "Computer starts on its own" and see if there is any more info you can up with. However if you are actually shutting the computer down I don't see how any of those examples could be the problem because windows isn't running, the only thing that can start it is the power button connected to the MB. Why is it always the computer,Why cant my iron start on its own and iron my clothes?

When you say "shut it down" do you mean put it to sleep?

From the information so far provided, you should look carefully at the BIOS settings on the computer.

The BIOS on my system permits power up by an external modem or by an internal timer settable for date
and time. That is the BIOS can be set to turn on the computer daily at a specific time.

If you are not sure about checking/changing the BIOS, you should try turning off the modem. At the very least, you will save on electricity as these devices (left on 24hrs/day) have recently been sited as major wasters of power.

If, like the others say, you are actually shutting it down, not just putting it to sleep, it has to be the power switch or something in the power system. What happens if you unplug it from the UPS and plug it straight into the wall? If it doesn't do it any more, then there is something in your UPS causing it. As Geo says, Windows isn't running, so it can't be causing it. Unplugging from the UPS and plugging directly into the wall would be the first thing I would try.

And not just the iron, Geo, why can't my vacuum cleaner spontaneously turn on and vacuum my floors?

You could check the BIOS for settings like "Wake on LAN" (WOL) and make sure it isn't selected.

You could also check to make sure something like "Configure mouse or keyboard to wake the computer" isn't set up.
http://www.verdiem.com/kb/configure-mouse-or-keyboard-wake-computer-windows-0

You could also just unplug the thing, or turn the power supply off if you have a switch.

(Or if it's a laptop, pull the battery out.)

Re: PC starts by itself - 07/24/14 07:22 PM

Hello again!

When i say shut down i mean shut down and not putting it to sleep. I checked also the settings for the shutting down button (i run win7) and shutting down is selected. I forgot to mention that when my PC is off and i mean after i shut it down when i move the mouse it starts again like it was put to sleep. And it starts windows from the beginning as if i have put it to sleep. So i checked "Configure mouse or keyboard to wake the computer" as Jenny100 states and i turned it off but still PC was on this morning although it was turned off last night. I'll try putting it direct to the wall as Draclvr suggests and turn of the modem as Robert Gault suggests and i'll let you know. Hope UPS is not the problem couse i definitely need it
As for the BIOS settings i haven't touched a thing in there ever but i'll give it a try (if i find anything at all lol)

Thank you all!!! kissy

ok the BIOS i think is ok. Those are the settings at the power menu:

Repost Video On S3 Resume: Disabled
ACPI 2.0 Support: Disabled
ACPI APIC Support: Enabled

APM Configuration
Power on by RTC Alarm: Disabled
Power on by External modems: Disabled
Power on by PCI devices: Disabled
Power on by PCIE devices: Disabled
Power on by PS/2 keyboard: Disabled

Re: PC starts by itself - 07/28/14 05:48 AM

Your last post suggest, to me at least, your computer isn't actually shutting down. I don't know if this happens on every computer, but when our computer goes to sleep, the power light flashes about once a second--or so. Waking it back up only requires pressing the power button.

When you shut down your computer are you seeing any lights after you believe it's shut down? Because if you're still seeing a flashing power light, or other lights, after you believe the computer is shut down, then the computer isn't actually shutting down.

Re: PC starts by itself - 07/28/14 06:26 AM

When my computer is asleep, there are no flashing lights or ANY lights for that matter. Waking mine up only takes a tap of any key on the keyboard or a wiggle of the mouse.

Re: PC starts by itself - 07/28/14 05:54 PM

I don't see any flashing lights... duh

When i choose Shutting Down option the windows are stating that they are actually "shutting down".

I know it looks like it is put to sleep but apart from the mouse starting thing but all the other facts suggest that it was shut down.

When i move the mouse, windows are starting from the beginning. If it was put to sleep i should have been already in the windows, right?

I haven't tried the solution that Draclvr suggests about the UPS yet blush

I Googled your problem and found this tech forum where a user has the same problem. Maybe some of the suggestions will help.

If all else fails pull the plug. If it turns itself on while unplugged, run for your life. I couldn't resist. Seriously if you don't find a solution unplug it.

Re: PC starts by itself - 07/30/14 01:16 AM

You still need to eliminate the UPS as the problem. I do think it's not really shutting itself off completely though. But you've got to eliminate the hardware first - that's easy!

Re: PC starts by itself - 08/01/14 12:34 AM

I unplugged it from the UPS and plugged it directly on the wall. It was still starting with the mouse without pressing any button but when i replugged it on the ups the mouse did nothing. I had to press the power button in order to start PC. crazy

I haven't shut it off since then. I'll let you know tomorrow what will happen cause i returned home really late so i'll deal with it tomorrow. sleep

wave

Found it on this morning hardwall

Re: PC starts by itself - 08/02/14 07:25 AM

Another article which might help.

A guy on this site had the same problem and was able to fix the problem.

One more site which has another fix.

In two of these cases the BIOS WOL was set to on/enable, and was responsible for the shut down computer to start during the night. Once the BIOS WOL was disabled, the problem ceased.

Thanks again Homer6. I'll see what i can do wave

No point in doing any of this if you haven't tried unplugging from that UPS and going straight to the outlet.

Did that Draclvr. Check a previous post i made. I don't think i accomplished anything. Did you mean something else from what i did? I also checked BIOS settings on power menu (post them on a previous post too). duh

Re: PC starts by itself - 08/04/14 08:49 PM

Gads, I always try to read a whole thread before I respond. bit I totally missed that post - sorry!

Now that you've eliminated the UPS, I would unplug your mouse and keyboard from the computer after you shut down and see what happens. In fact, I would unplug every USB peripheral from the computer including printers etc. Shut it down and see what happens.

Re: PC starts by itself - 08/06/14 05:41 PM

...and if after unplugging all USB devices, plug them back in one at a time, and see if the computer will start itself. If nothing happens, unplug that device and plug in the next one. Plug, wait, unplug in this fashion with all of the unplugged devices. If one of those devices is the problem, it should cause the computer to start when it's plugged back into the computer.

Re: PC starts by itself - 08/07/14 01:57 AM

Yup - exactly what Homer6 says... IF it is one of your USB peripherals, that should smoke out the culprit.
