Weather - 08/11/14 02:44 PM

I have Google as a home page and want to keep it because it is convenient. Is there any way to add local weather to it.I would like to have a local 5 day forecast there. Google is almost an all blank white page anyway with lots of room.

Google used to offer the best home page ever, but they took it away. I still miss my iGoogle home page. You could put anything you want there. I now use igHome. You can add any gadgets you want. I have a couple of weather gadgets, some regular news, tech news, my Google calendar and a recipe of the day gadget.

And I didn't explain very well! The answer is no, you can't add weather or anything else for that matter. With the old iGoogle home page, you COULD add things, but no more. If you want gadgets - weather or otherwise - you have to use a website that offers them.

If you are using Windows 7 or Windows 8, there are desktop gadgets you can use - I use the weather one. They took most of them away, but there are some 3rd party apps that add them back.

Draclvr,Take a look at this. Can you tell if this installs as a desktop background,or does it install as a desktop icon? ( http://www.weather.com/apps/desktop-weather )

It's a desktop icon... The Weather.com app is included with Windows 8.1 and I use it all the time. When you open up the app, it looks like either the one on the left if you have an earlier version of Windows or the one on the right if you have Windows 8.1.

I have this same gadget on my igHome home page. I do like the weather warnings.

Geo,
If you use Opera...or I believe Firefox now...you can make a Speed Dial icon linking to the weather site you like best.
My browser is skinned with an image of Assassins Creed (of all things) and the Speed Dial icons are on top of it where I can reach them instantly.
They are essentially tiny images of the webpages you've linked to, easy to add and just as easy to remove.

Geo, I had to boot into my Windows 7 drive and I downloaded this app to see what it was like. BEWARE!! It tries to install ask.com and some other foistware to your computer. Even after I declined, it STILL tried to put ask.com in my Firefox. Firefox warned me and got rid of it, but I would stay away from this app as it is. When you open it, it looks great - until the huge ads open up inside the app.

Geo, try this. Just type in your location in the upper left box. Midway down the page you can see a map on the right border. You can center that map over your street. Once you do that it gives you a local forecast as local as you can get. Once done, bookmark the page and it will always go to the spot you set. Your info said Michigan so I simply picked a city, likely not the right one. The link should open to Lansing.

It is not an app so nothing is downloaded to your computer but it is a handy page and can be localized.

It is the National Weather Forecast localized site. You can't add it to Google and if you do not wish to change your home page this will be a click away.

What a great idea, oldmariner. Kinda sorta similar to what Gil said.

I use fullscreenradar all the time. It's a short cut on the desktop.

I downloaded the desktop weather. Just as I opened it what do you think I saw
a big add on the right hand corner. I see enough add in the internet I don't need to see them on my desktop. To bad I think I would like it. I just uninstalled it.

Thanks for that "weather" link, Oldmariner. It sure comes in handy. I have Google Chrome as my browser. Now that I have this website in my "Bookmarks", do you know how to copy that site to my desktop from the "Bookmarks" drop-down list? I have tried "Copy and Paste", but that doesn't work. I have WIN XP as my OS. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks very much, Richard. It looks like I have forgotten some of the "basics".
Sandy

I have WIN XP, Richard. I tried what you suggested, but there is no option to "Create a shortcut" or "send to desk" on the drop=down list. I even tried to Right-Click and "drag" the link to my desktop, but that didn't work either. I must be missing something here. I could "swear" that I've done this before.
