Did you get the game working? I just downloaded it from GOG where I bought it years ago and am playing it now. Played good. Tex sure looks young. Been years since I played it.

I can't say about the GOG version, but there is a patch that adds additional mpeg2 drivers to the dropdown list in the game options. You can try selecting one of the other drivers. Be careful about applying that patch to the GOG release, though as it will overwrite their patched EXE and it will then need the game disc to run.

Does anyone know if the GOG version is the DVD or CD version?

My understanding is that the GOG version started out as the CD version but towards the end of last year it was updated to the DVD version.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/06/14 05:40 AM

My copy included both the CDs and the DVD. The DVD has noticeably better videos. Not sure if this was one of the ones that GOG used my installer to help prepare their package.

Mine is the same Collector - and yes, the DVD version was much better. The only problem with it was its rather limited support for hardware. Just because you owned a DVD player when the game was released didn't ensure you could actually play it.

Judging by the quality of my GOG version, I'd have to say it's the CD material - hard to say. Someone still needs to trap that nagging error message you get under Windows 7.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/07/14 12:47 AM

I get the same nagging error message on win xp and win 7. What could it be.

I just start playing the game and it crashed to my desktop.Should I change the compatibility mode. What else should I change. The game won't play on 7. I played two hrs. on my xp and it played fine. I'm still trying to get the hang of win 7. Thanks

That was what the TEX5B104 patch was supposed to address. Before the patch it only lists about four different drivers. The patch adds about a dozen more. Again, I warn GOG users that applying the patch may make the game start asking for the DVD.

Don't know if it is something that I might be able to solve or not, but what is the error message in Win7?

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/07/14 09:59 AM

My GOG version works straight out of the box for me on Win7 64bit, K-lite codec pack installed. I just get a "Error: Error code does not indicate an error" error, but it doesn't seem to affect gameplay.

There's no need to apply the 1.04 update in the GOG version - it's already patched. You can find the readme in the install folder.

I tried two other games and they played good. It's overseer I'm having trouble with. The game played but without sound. In the right side in the inventory that little magdefine glass isn't highlighted, but as far as the game playing it's ok.

Are you specifying "Use FFDSHOW" when you start the game? It seems to correct the missing sound problem for me.

That's from the launcher - it want's you to close the applications in red. You can generally ignore that screen. But, just after that you "should" see the FFDSHOW options. If you chose to never display the options again (at the bottom), that's probably why you don't see it.

Go into you C: drive and find the GOG Games folder - rename OVERSEER to something else, and reinstall the game. The next time you start it, you should see the FFDSHOW options. Choose "Always use FFDSHOW".

I downloaded the game again what should I do when I get the first screen. Should I press any of the colored buttons.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/07/14 11:18 PM

I ignore them, it's the second set of options, for FFDSHOW, you want to setup.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/07/14 11:40 PM

I downloaded the game completely so there wasn't any files left on the hard drive. Installed the game again but I never got FFDSHOW. The game played okay but I don't have any sound.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/08/14 12:04 AM

Peruse to C:\GOG Games\Overseer - do you see a file named TEX5B104.TXT? Also, did you rename the original folder before you reinstalled?

Edit -

One other thing to check - when the game starts - Select CONFIG from the in game settings. Under Video, the default MPEG2 player for this version should be set to XING MPEG II.

Edit II -

Apparently when you select "Always Use" in the FFDSHOW options, a REG key under HKCU\GNU is defined - renaming the key and restarting the game will once again display the FFDSHOW options, but then there's no Sound... I'm going to have to dig a bit deeper for this one...

Edit smile

Well, if you rename the registry key to GNUORG and restart the game, you will eventually get sound... Just not for the intro (which is weird). I'd give it a shot, start REGEDIT and peruse to HKCU\GNU and rename it... then start the game - make sure you select "Always Use" for FFDSHOW.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/08/14 04:54 AM

Or just edit CheckerLevel back to 0 in the sentry.ini file in the game's directory to show the launcher again.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/08/14 10:15 AM

Funny when Tex is in his office alone with nobody around he is talking and I have sound I can hear him. When he uses the video phone I can hear everything. When other people are with him I get no sound.
This is what I got back from GOG.
Hello
I'm afraid that your operating system is not supported in this game. It was released after the game's initial GOG release, and we weren't able to make the game work reliably on our test computers running that system. Because of this, this system is not listed among the compatible ones on the product page. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Do you have access to a different PC that has Windows XP or Vista installed, and meets the game's minimal requirements?

Very cool Collector - I'd never have put that one together smile

Edit - Actually that has no affect on the FFDSHOW options, at least on my game.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/08/14 06:54 PM

I've played through 40 minutes or so - The only way I could restore sound completely was to uninstall the game, delete the GNU registry key and reinstall. Doing it any other way failed to create the ffdshow_audio keys, which appear to be used for the opening sequences. I suppose it makes sense, because its playing the DVD video files at that point.

Start REGEDIT and peruse to -

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GNU
ffdshow
ffdshow_audio

If you don't see ffdshow_audio - you won't hear the DVD audio.

Click the Start Orb, type REGEDIT in Search and press enter. Once there, highlight HKEY_CURRENT_USER and click EDIT, FIND - enter ffdshow. It should take you right to it.

Re: tex murphy overseer HELP!! - 09/08/14 07:43 PM

GOG should have told me what you told me to do. I couldn't believe it. Thank you so very much Inland. I only played about 10 min of it just to get the feel of it. happydance
