Not yet I haven't.

Re: Sanitarium - 10/30/14 01:58 PM

I looked around online to see if anyone else had experienced this error message, and a few people had posted with this problem. For some, right clicking on the exe file and going to Properties, then to Compatibility, and then putting a checkmark by "Run this program as an administrator," fixed the problem for them. It's worth a try.

Re: Sanitarium - 10/30/14 02:09 PM

Thanks Marian will give it a try. Didn't work I don't have any compatibity.

Re: Sanitarium - 10/30/14 02:47 PM

Richard, try right clicking on the exe file and you should see a menu come up; one of the options is to run as the administrator. Make sure that is checked. I was forgetting that you don't need to go to Compatibility to find the run as administrator option.

Re: Sanitarium - 10/30/14 02:58 PM

Ok Marian will try again. Here is what comes up, General,Security,Details,Previous Versions. What do I do now.
Richard

Re: Sanitarium - 10/30/14 03:09 PM

I think I know what the problem is about finding the run as administrator option - it's because you are trying to play the game through Steam, and therefore it works differently.

I found these instructions on a Steam forum, but I don't know if it will work - someone more knowledgeable will have to step in and try to help. Anyway, here are the instructions:

Quote:
Find the application in the steam folders, right click on the exe for the game and choose properties, then choose compatibility tab and check mark the check box at the bottom that says run as administrator. Then every time you start the game it will run in admin mode.

That's all I can think of. If this is of no help, maybe another GameBoomer will be able to help, or Steam can help you.

Hello Richard,

We are the developers of this version on Steam.
Does it work now?

If not, could you please send us the crash.dmp file (C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\DotEmu\Sanitarium)?
Then, we could know where is exactly the issue and help you.

Thank you,
The DotEmu Team

Richard, I would imagine that you can send the crash file to the email address listed on DotEmu's profile.

Thats what I was thinking to Marian. I found the Crash.dmp file. Her e-mail isn't properly installed so I copy and pasted her e-mail but the crash, dmp was to big to e-mail. How do I get the file to her.
Richard

Re: Sanitarium - 10/30/14 07:33 PM

I didn't think that the crash dump file would be that large. Let's wait for some advice from DotEmu or one of the techies here.
Posted By: kjos

Re: Sanitarium - 10/30/14 07:41 PM

Must be to big this is what I get this is what I get when I try to attach the file.Error: Some attachments are too big. Size of each file is limited to 20 MB. I checked the size of the file and it says 1.30 KB. I sent a e-mail to her and see if she any other ideas.
Jessica sent me UPLOAD.EE never heard of it but I used it and it really works good up to 200MB. So I sent her the crash.dmp File.

I downloaded sanitarium from steam I will install the game again and send you another crash.dmp file. That's the only download that I see on steam. When I open up crash.dmp file I get Adobe Reader 11.0 I wonder why. Have you looked at it? Would Adobe reader be causing all my trouble.
should I try to delete Adobe reader. Do I really need it on my computer.

I suspect that installing the game and updating it are two separate steps. Installing the game and reinstalling it would only be repeating the first step twice.

No it's not Adobe's fault.
Apparently Adobe is the default application to open .dmp files, even though it doesn't work.

You don't need to open it anyway. It wouldn't mean anything to you.
Let DotEMU handle opening it and evaluating it.

No. You could use a different pdf reader.
But if you want to open pdf files, you need some type of pdf reader installed.

Did you start the Steam client and get the update installed DotEmu mentioned? Make sure you are starting the Steam client, not just going to your account on Steam.

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 09:09 PM

I just downloaded the game from steam. I don't know what you mean by started the steam client. I went to steam and clicked on steam-self updater
and your steam client is already up-to-date
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 10:15 PM

All that did is update your Steam Client, not your game. You will need to start it on your computer. You will need to find the Steam client on your computer and sign in. Once you are signed it, you should be taken to your Steam Library - you need to be in your Steam Library within your Steam Account.

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 10:16 PM

Same thing here, crash after the loading screen and message "unknown error has occurred". I check the "run as administrator" box, have installed and uninstalled the game multiple times and i have restarted the steam client after every time, but nothing helps. Weird thing is, after the install it doesnt update the game regardless i restart steam.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 10:19 PM

That is strange, Aleksi - when you start the client, it should update the game when you start it. Try going to your Steam Library once you sign in to your account.

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 10:26 PM

I do. I have wasted fair share of my time on steam, and i know how the autoupdates work, but it doesnt "patch" it after reinstalling.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 10:27 PM

Then maybe it's time to head for Steam support for the game... doesn't seem like this is getting you anywhere.

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 10:32 PM

I found the steam client and open it and I got couldn't find a streaming game for your account on the local network
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 10:35 PM

OK... that could mean the client cannot find the game on your computer. With the Client open, see if you can go to your Library. See if the game is listed with an indication that there is an update for it - remember you must be in your Library. If the updated is not listed, then DotEmu needs to work with Steam to get it up.
Posted By: kjos

Re: Sanitarium - 10/31/14 10:37 PM

I went into the steam library in the right hand corner and downloaded the game again. Went into steam and it's listed in the library.

Sounds to me like Steam has some work to do here... make sure you all contact them with your issues. It may take a while because it's a weekend, but they need to get it fixed. I have the same game from GOG and never had any problems at all.
Posted By: Aleksi

Re: Sanitarium - 11/01/14 02:53 PM

I may have a solution. It seems that the cinematic subtitles caused my crashing. Go to C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Roaming\DotEmu\Sanitarium, and open the UserDefault.xml* (im not sure was it this file, im not at home computer) and open it with notepad or wordpad or something. Find <Movie_Subtitles>1</Movie_Subtitles> and change the number in the middle to 0, then save changes. After i made the changes, the game works like a charm.

I found this at steam forums, so no props for me smile
Posted By: kjos

Re: Sanitarium - 11/01/14 03:27 PM

I did what you said but there was no Movie_subtitles
Richard
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Sanitarium - 11/01/14 03:46 PM

Props to you for posting it though, Aleksi!

Richard, you might have to look around a bit to find the right file since Aleksi says he's not positive that was the right one. Did you open it with Wordpad?
Posted By: Jenny100

Re: Sanitarium - 11/01/14 04:30 PM

It sounds like there's a problem with running the game with subtitles on the cut scenes -- maybe because the subtitles are missing.

Kjos,
Just in case it wasn't clear, "Movie_subtitles" is not the name of the file you look for. It's called UserDefault.xml or something like that, and it is something unique to the Steam version of the game. It does not exist with the GOG version of Sanitarium, and there are no folders or subfolders in
C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Roaming\
that have to do with Sanitarium if you install the GOG version.

Kjos,
Did you ever try the GOG version of the game?
Posted By: kjos

Re: Sanitarium - 11/01/14 04:47 PM

I installed the gog verson but it wouldn't run. In steam I opened Default.xml and opened it with notepad. Will wait until steam gets it fixed.

Things to be aware of:

1. The GOG version works fine on most computers.
2. kjos has had malware infections that could have damaged files and past damage could be affecting whether the game works. Cleaning out virus and other malware does not automatically restore damaged files. Damaged files could also be affecting whether the game can update on Steam. These may not be files that are used very often, so you rarely see the damage in everyday use of the computer and don't realize it is there.

I sure hope they get this fixed for you folks, it's a fantastic game. Having said that, back when I played the game under DosBox as well as Virtual PC, I had many crashes. I recall having to save my game every 10 minutes or so just to avoid replaying long sequences.

Are these download versions using DosBox?

I'm not sure how you got it working in DOSBox, since it isn't for DOS or Windows 3.1. It may be possible to get Windows 95 working in DOSbox, but would probably be trouble with Windows 95's memory leak.

I played the GOG version of Sanitarium in Windows 8.1.
No major problems, but I do seem to remember that it turned down my sound volume in Windows when I installed it (not just volume in the game, but for the whole computer).

If that's the case, then I'm probably mistaken - I do recall running it under several emulators however. None of them were perfect, but I did manage to finish the game.

Re: Sanitarium - 11/16/14 06:05 PM

Win9x is not supported in DOSBox. A few have managed to install it, but in official DOSBox it is not stable enough to be usable. Some experimental builds are better, but do not expect any kind of support for those builds. You will be on your own. Win3x, on the other hand is supported.

I'll let you know how it goes - After searching (and searching again... and again...) I am unable to locate my copy of the game. So... I'm off to purchase another boxed copy today. I have a bootable 95 image for Dosbox, but I'm sure it was created after I replayed the game several years ago.

Re: Sanitarium - 11/16/14 11:05 PM

For what it is worth, as I have not tried this, instructions for running Win95 in DOSBox can be found
http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=17324
There is the suggestion that Win98SE can also be made to work.

If Win95 can be run as the site suggests, then Sanitarium might run by this indirect route.
Posted By: Jenny100

Re: Sanitarium - 11/17/14 03:05 PM

There is also this
http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=24936
which they moved to ***Google Docs*** for updating (maybe so more than one person can work on it).

The problem is that getting Windows 95 installed in DOSBox is one thing, but getting games working well on it is another. It's interesting that they say Windows 95a and original (which are 16bit) work better than the later (32bit) Windows 95 versions.

It's also a lot harder to get Windows 95 working in DOSBox than Windows 3.1. Installing Windows 3.1 is like installing a floppy game, followed by video and sound drivers. You don't have to create a fixed drive image the way you do for Windows 95/98.
***VOGONS guide to installing Windows 3.1 on DOSBox***

Virtual PC would probably work better for Windows 95 games, but what a pain it was to get it installed and running on Windows 8.1. I had to download a set of files meant for Windows phone, and had to hunt down an older version of that that was actually complete because newer versions were only meant to update what was there. Otherwise Virtual PC wouldn't work properly -- would crash as soon as I tried to do anything. VMware Player would probably also work, but I prefer the interface in Virtual PC.
Posted By: Collector

Re: Sanitarium - 11/20/14 10:36 PM

Just keep in mind that if you have trouble with 9x in DOSBox, don't ask on VOGONS for help since it is not officially supported nor are the experimental builds of DOSBox. That guide was intended for advanced DOSBox users who wanted to experiment. This is part of the reason that that guide was moved.

It really is best to use one of the established VMs rather than DOSBox if you want to setup 9x.
