Grim Fandango -Open GL

Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/29/15 08:13 PM

Hello,

I have just downloaded Grim Fandango Remastered from GOG.com,
but when I try to launch the game I get a message that it can't run
because required Open GL features are not available and that
I should make sure that the latest graphics drivers are installed.

I have installed the latest graphics drivers, but I still
get the same message!

Please help.

Ole

P.S. My operating system is Windows 7

What video card do you have?
You'll have to look for the most recent version of the drivers that support OpenGL --
which may not be the "most recent" at all.

Hello Jenny100,

First of all, thank you for answering me so quickly.

I am a novice as far as computers are concerned,
so although I have been searching high and low
I have not been able to find my video card.

How do I find it?

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 01:45 AM

There are lots of ways to check what video card you have, but this article shows one
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2406120,00.asp

another
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000258.htm

You can also run dxdiag from the Start Search and check what it lists on the Display tab.

Or run speccy from
https://www.piriform.com/speccy

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 01:57 AM

The game is very demanding as for the video card - 'your graphics card should support OpenGL 3.3 at a minimum'. So if it says some Open GL features are unavailable that could be bad news as no new drivers could fix it.

Please check if your PC satisfies the requirements: ATI Radeon HD 4650 / NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 / Intel HD 4000 Graphics, or equivalent. If you don't have a video card and use built-in chipset with graphics, then it has to be Intel HD 4000 and nothing less than that.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 04:08 AM

Wow... that's a minimum of an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5 or Core i7 CPU with the integrated video chipset.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 08:03 AM

I do appreciate all your recommendations, but it is much to complicated for me,
so I will probably just discard this game and move on to another.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 08:50 AM

Ole, please don't give up. Have you tried one of Jenny's suggestions on determining what your video card is? From there we can help you figure this out. I've just started playing it and it's well worth the effort!

The easiest is to run DXDIAG and let us know what it says.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 04:53 PM

So I tried one of Jenny's suggestions and found this:

Chip-type Intel(R) HD Graphics (Core i5)

DAC-type Internal

BIOS-information Intel video BIOS

Is this any help?

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 05:29 PM

See if any of this will work -- just in case your Intel drivers are compatible with OpenGL and only need to turn it on...

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 06:00 PM

Plus if his CPU is an older Core i5, it will only have Intel 2500 graphics on it. Not sure if that would have anything do with Open GL though. I hope the suggestion to just turn it on will work.

If you're unsure as to what your current video card is, please be careful if you're planning on moving onto other -- newer -- games. Graphics requirements seem to grow ever higher with each new game that's released. So please don't spend your money without first researching yes, your graphics card, and if your card/computer can support the game in question.

Edit: Just registered Ole's more recent post. The logic still stands, though, that one should be wary of purchasing a game without first ensuring that their video card meets the requirements. (I speak from experience. lol )

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 08:40 PM

Indeed - Know Thy Video Card! Even though he has a very nice Core i5 processor, if it is a previous generation Core i5, the integrated graphics may not have enough "oomph" to play new games.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 08:47 PM

Hello Jenny,

I right-click on my desktop and click
Graphic Properties and then click 3D,
but the Intel Graphics name is not
displayed on the screen.

As I have the original version of this game,
I will play this and forget about the remastered version.

Thank you so much for your help!

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 10:38 PM

Well, if you don't want to mess with driver roulette, it's up to you. They don't make it easy to find Intel graphics drivers that are compatible with OpenGL, and from what Draclvr said, the game might not work well anyway if you have an early version i5.

If you have problems running the original Grim Fandango in Windows 7, try running it using ResidualVM or Grim Mouse. (Grim Mouse is a modification of ResidualVM). Grim Mouse makes it possible to play the original Grim Fandango using the mouse. Grim Mouse has been available for almost a year now, but it's still a work in progress (made by a fan of the game) and may have bugs.
http://tobiaspfaff.com/blog/2014/05/25/grim/

Announcement thread for Grim Mouse in the ResidualVM forum here
http://forums.residualvm.org/viewtopic.php?t=623

If you want to use ResidualVM and not Grim Mouse, you can get it here
http://residualvm.org/downloads/

The advantage of ResidualVM over Grim is that it's been tested enough and they claim the game is finishable
http://residualvm.org/compatibility/DEV/grim/

Both require the original game discs.
Instructions for ResidualVM here
http://wiki.residualvm.org/index.php/Running_ResidualVM

Or you can try the launcher and installer listed in the ***Windows 7 and Games thread***.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/30/15 10:48 PM

To run the original Grim in Windows 7 or Windows 8, Ole will need the Squirt the Cat installer. Ole, you can find links to the installer in the Windows 7 and Games or the Windows 8 and Games threads stickied at the top of the Glitches forum. I had it running perfectly in both my Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 01/31/15 04:16 AM

Once again thank you all for your input,
but as I said, I am not that savvy with the computer,
so I will just move on to another game
(I've got dozens to choose from).

Re: Grim Fandango - 01/31/15 09:00 PM

I see a few other folks in the GOG forum having trouble with this part of the game, but I see no solutions as yet. I am also reading that a patch with several bug fixes is due to be released soon, so maybe the patch will help.

Re: Grim Fandango - 02/01/15 05:51 AM

The game was VERY bugged in my press pre-release version. They had a patch almost every day and now it is much more playable.
dianne, I think I had the same issue - try pressing the button associated with 'take' while on bone wagon. Try to press all the buttons smile Some of them will work.

Re: Grim Fandango - 02/01/15 06:08 AM

I gave up on it because i thought there wasn't anything i could do about it and i wouldn't know how to install a patch anyhow
so i uninstalled the game completely.

Re: Grim Fandango - 02/01/15 02:26 PM

There is an area where you are looking out of the window over the cat place that, no matter where you click, you can't leave. Luckily, you can exit using the keyboard controls. Took me a few minutes to figure it out though.

Modern patches are easy --
1. Download the patch
2. Double-click the patch
3. Confirm that you want to install the patch

Re: Grim Fandango - 02/01/15 10:53 PM

I think a patch has been released. And is available at Steam just not yet available at GOG.

I bought my game from GOG and am quite happy to wait. I prefer GOG to Steam ANY day yes

There will probably be a patch/update released this week on GOG.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 02/20/15 02:06 AM

This problem has been discussed by at least two other forum members here - apparently the remastered version of Grim Fandango does not run on Windows XP. Write to GOG Customer Support and explain your situation, and I feel confident that they will give you a refund.

Re: Grim Fandango -Open GL - 02/20/15 04:35 AM

samuel, it clearly states on GOG that the game does not work on XP - it states you need Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8. As Marian says, I'm sure they will give you a refund or a credit. This is a copy/paste from the GOG website.

There is this installer, which is probably the easiest.
http://quickandeasysoftware.net/software/grim-fandango-setup

Or you can play it using ResidualVM by copying the game files on the CD's to your hard drive and pointing Residual at them.
http://wiki.residualvm.org/index.php/Grim_Fandango

And there is Grim Mouse, a point-and-click-controlled version based on ResidualVM. However it is still a work in progress, and they warn you about bugs.

I believe the links in the Windows 7 and Games and Windows 8 and games for Grim Fandango installers still work. These are the installers from Squirt the Cat and I used them to get Grim to run on XP, Windows 7 and even on Windows 8.
