I am loading dreamfall The longest journey right now and it wants me to load directx 9.... I look and I have something like directx 3d... if I load 9 is this going to cause problems on my new window 8.1 machine

Glad it's working for you.

You may have installed it for another game at some point - but to answer your question, you won't have any issues installing it under Windows 7 or greater.
