Saved Games Locations - 04/01/15 09:59 PM

Hi.

After a recent fiasco with finding game saves, I started to look at the various places where saves are actually stored on my Win7 machine.
And in the first five minutes have already come up with four different locations !!

How nice would it be if the save game files were stored with the game files ??

They ARE in many of the oldies I re-play yes

Cheers.

This guy came up with nine locations.

Someone made a website listing save locations of different games
http://savelocations.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Games

Unfortunately they aren't all that helpful. For example

http://savelocations.wikia.com/wiki/Lost_Horizon
lists the save location for Lost Horizon as
Quote:
shell:personal\Lost Horizon

and you have to click the "shell:personal" link to find
Quote:
Default Location (2000, XP): C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\My Documents\

Default Location (Vista, 7): C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\

So why don't they just say that on the Lost Horizon page instead of making you click on two links?

Save game locations are so much fun - they're even located in different folders depending on which version of Windows you run. smile

Then they would likely end up in %LocalAppData%\VirtualStore instead and there would be no separation between different users' save games. The problem is not that the save games are not stored in the game's directory, but that there seems to be no standard. Not much that you can do about legacy games, but for newer games there is no excuse to not use "C:\Users\<User Name>\Saved Games\<Game Name>\".

Ah, but that would be too easy, wouldn't it!
