Can't get Through to Steam Support

Can't get Through to Steam Support - 04/08/15 02:36 PM

Hi smile

Today I bought The Mystery of the Druids from Steam and it plays fine.

But when I click on "Quit" to leave the game my computer locks up and I have to use Task Manager and force a shutdown. [Not good !!]

So I've been trying to contact Steam Support but am finding it impossible.

Apparently my normal credentials aren't suitable for getting support and I have to use a separate Support Account - but when I try to create one, I'm told one already exists.
However, I don't know my user name or password for this existing Support Account and cannot make contact without them.

I'm just going round in circles !!

Does anyone know of a way I can ask Steam for help using my normal Steam ID ??

Thanks.

Mad, you can try using 'If you have lost your password' option on Steam support page! Probably you used the same e-mail address on your Steam Support account and your usual Steam account. Or, and they also have Steam Forum accounts that are different as well smile

I've tried that, Iurii, but I have to also give a "user name" (which I don't know) as I am told my normal Steam one doesn't work for support woozy

It's so ridiculous.

I very rarely use Steam and am beginning to wish I hadn't THIS time !!

It says that password recovering should work not just with a "user name" but with e-mail as well ("If you have lost your password: Email or Username"). Did you try entering your e-mail there?

I use Steam a lot for many years - luckily I did not need to contact support. In fact, it is always easier (and much faster) to contact game developers - Steam only sells games so that you contact them for financial issues, not for fixing game bugs. Unfortunately the developers for 'The Mystery of the Druids' are probably no longer available - still the best method would be to write on Steam forums as people from Nordic usually read and react.

I guess you could try putting in your email address as the "user name" but that may not work. From what you said, it sounds like leaving the "user name" blank won't work either -- sounds like you already tried that.

You'll probably have to create a new email account just for Steam support. Maybe create one at Google or whatever Microsoft is calling their free email service now. Sometimes a new email account and starting from scratch is the only way around these kinds of problems.

There could also be a temporary problem on Steam's end that only affects some customers.

I have a friend who recently had a similar problem with Steam passwords, but I'm not sure it's exactly the same because she was logging in to download a game. She didn't tell me how she fixed the problem, but said it was "Steam's roundabout way of telling me to change my password."

Well I can’t ask on the Steam Forums, I’ve tried.
I need to create different credentials to do so – and the site software won’t let me !!

Yes, I’ve tried both and cannot progress.

I do already have an alternative email address so I suppose I could try that. However, I’m not going to mess about much more. For what the game cost it’s not worth all this hassle.

[And I still have the original release which works flawlessly on my Win98 machine so I can play it on that.]

Maybe GOG will offer it at some time and if they do I won't have any problems like these. They have never failed to get me sorted if a game I bought from them has misbehaved.

I much prefer them to Steam in so many, many ways yes

EDIT :
I forgot to say that the message Task Manager gives is ....
"Cougar Engine V1.0 is not responding."

Re: Can't get Through to Steam Support - 04/08/15 05:46 PM

Can you exit the game using Task Manager instead of using "Quit" from the game menu?
A few years ago I had a game where it was much easier to do that than to try to Exit using the game interface. I forget which game it was, but the game took several minutes to close using the "Exit" in the game while it closed instantly using Task Manager. So I used Task Manager for that game.

Re: Can't get Through to Steam Support - 04/09/15 04:33 PM

Sorry I couldn't get back here before now, Jenny100.

Yes. Once I've saved my game, if I do Ctrl/Alt/Del and then use Task Manager (instead of hitting Quit) I CAN escape back to Desktop.
But when I get there, the resolution is still at the in-game setting of 640/480 - so it's not an ideal situation rolleyes

Am I causing any harm to my computer exiting this way ??

Re: Can't get Through to Steam Support - 04/09/15 04:46 PM

It won't harm the computer to shut a game down with Task Manager.
I'd be more concerned over a game locking up the computer every time you exit the game.

What is the game conflicting with?
What is it trying to do when it shuts down that is causing the computer to lock up?
At least when I shut it down myself I know all it's doing is shutting down.

It's an extra step to put your resolution back to normal, but doing it manually instead of having the game do it won't hurt the computer either.

OK - And thanks for that reassurance, Jenny100. Much appreciated thumbsup

I might just carry on with this version then.

But I'm still annoyed about the whole Steam rigmarole mad

Re: Can't get Through to Steam Support - 04/10/15 07:08 AM

Well .... Unfortunately things have deteriorated to the level of awful whistle

I'm getting frequent crashes during play now, whereas initially the crash only occurred on using "Quit".
And the error message is always to do with this "Cougar Engine".

Apparently it runs alright in WinXP, (as per a player who posted on the Adventure Board) but according to the blurb at Steam, the game should run in several different versions of Windows.

However there's certainly no way I'm installing Steam on any other of my machines !! duh

So I'm giving up.
At least I can still play the old CD version on my Win98 machine.
And maybe GOG will offer it at some time.

Do you know if your Steam version has options for hardware or software mode the way the original CD version did? If it does, see if the software mode works better.

Re: Can't get Through to Steam Support - 04/10/15 06:42 PM

Hi Jenny100 wave

I uninstalled the game - so I can't look.
Sorry !!

I went and checked on Steam Forum messages. [I can look but not interact.]
And there are other people suffering crashes whilst running the game in Win7.

So I'll keep my eye on the thread in case a solution is ever offered.

Thanks.

Re: Can't get Through to Steam Support - 04/11/15 12:31 PM

One thing I just remembered about the original disk release is that to play it in Win98 I had to reduce graphic acceleration to zero yes

EDIT :
Well just out of interest I decided to try installing the original disk version to WinXP - and without altering any acceleration settings it worked straight off !!
There's a very slight wavering of the mouse (but so slight it's hardly noticeable) so I'm going to give the game a go "as is" on WinXP now.
Yahoo !! bravo bravo bravo

EDIT2 :
And .... The saves all sit in a little folder called "SAVES" alongside all the other game files.
How cute is that ??
Ahhhh. Those were the days snicker

Have been checking but there doesn't seem to have been a solution offered at Steam as yet however I'm well into the game now - using the original disk release on my WinXP machine - and still astounded that this old game didn't need any tweaking at all and is still running extremely well bravo

That's good to know, Mad. I've always wanted to play this game but could never get it to run on my old XP. Will try the original disks on Win 7 and see what happens. think

Good luck with that then, SharonB !!

[I only tried the disks in Win98 and WinXP myself.]

Someone here tried and failed. I'm not trying to discourage you, though - it's still worth a try.

Now I remember think. I did try it on this system and still couldn't get it to work. I may eventually try it on Virtual PC. If I can figure out how to work it. headscratch

Re: Nordic Games Re-Releases House of Tales titles on Steam - 04/16/15 12:43 PM

Mad, I bought this game yesterday, and am having the same problem. I can save the game, but when I quit, I have to shut down my computer and re boot it. CTR ALT DEL does not work to get out of it. I have windows 7 64 bit. It is very frustrating as I am in no way computer savvy, and this is the only computer I own so I am stuck. I got it from Steam, And this is the first time I have had a problem with one of their games.

Hi dorish smile

Have you tried contacting Steam Support ??

I wasn't able to - as I said in my posts on the Glitches Board - but you might have better luck.

This problem certainly needs to be addressed.

[I'm really surprised that there aren't lots of people reporting that they are experiencing it !!]

Cheers.

When you hit Ctrl/Alt/Del can you not select "Task Manager" and close the game down that way ??

Hi Mad,
I too am having a few problems with this game(The Mystery of The Druids). I DID contact Steam Support, but I have NOT heard back from them, and it's been quite a while since I contacted (sent my complaint) to them. I AM progressing through the game, however, even with having an occasional "glitch" once in a while.

I'm not sure how to do that Mad. What do I click on once I'm in task manager?

Find the game listed, highlight it by clicking on it and then click on End Task.

And as Mad reported earlier in this thread, you may find your desktop resolution has been changed to what the game uses when you exit the game through Task Manager. So you may have the additional step of changing your desktop resolution back to normal.
