The first one is for the German version.
The second I would be leary about viruses.

Winfrey, Cathy is correct suggesting caution. You can buy the game from GOG for 9.99 perhaps get a better price if you watch for a sale. At least it will work on your system and you know it is safe. Just remember the old Axiom, "Nothing is ever free" There is always a catch. Game, movie and music free downloads rank right up there with porn sites as breeding grounds for viruses and hackers.

Yeah, when I saw it was a torrent website, my alarm bells went off.

There is a Phantasmagoria DOSBox installer at ***Sierrahelp***.

When installing from the created DVD, you can choose between full hard drive install (no disc required for play) or minimal install (DVD needed for play, but with no disc swapping). See ***this thread*** for all the features.

Thanks.. will keep that in mind. Never played in DOSBox

You may not even see DOSBox if the installer is configured the way they configure them over at GOG. If "Collector" drops by, he could probably tell you more about it.

Winfrey, if I remember correctly, I installed the original boxed version of this game on my WIN XP computer without any problems, and I played through the whole game, also with no problems.

XP SP2 and SP3 would probably have required tweaking. Do you remember whether you had any of the Service Packs installed at the time you played the game?

Also Inferno never got it working correctly on her computer, despite being able to get nearly every old game to work.
***Inferno's page*** lists Phantasmagoria as
Quote:
Phantasmagoria (needed patch as well...but still doesn't run fully)

So there may be an issue with drivers or some other characteristic of the computer as well.

Re: Phantasmagoria 1 - 04/16/15 10:46 PM

Hi Jenny, I believe the only thing I had to do to get it to work on my Win XP computer was to install that "Phanpat" patch. Just to make sure I'm accurate about that, I'm going to install the game again from my original boxed version and try it out. I'll let you know what happens.
Sandy

OK, I still have the game files on my hard drive, so I started to play it again. It's working perfectly. The patch I mentioned MUST be installed, and the .EXE file to start the game is "sierraw.exe". You must set the COMPATABILITY TAB of this file to Win 95, 256 Colors,640x480, and put checks into the remaining options in that comparability window.I hope that this helps you, Winfrey, as well as our other Fellow Boomers who are using the original DISC version, remember that I'm referring to only when playing this game on WIN XP. I have no idea if the Disc version will run on higher operating systems. Of course, when all is said and done you COULD download this game from GOG, which has all of the necessary "extras" already installed. That DEFINITELY would work without "tweaking" this game yourself. LOL

A lot easier to simply use the new installer.

Re: Phantasmagoria 1 - 05/03/15 02:12 AM

As oldmariner said you can buy it at GOG and right now it is on sale for a low price of $3.99 and you can get PH 2 at the same price

Re: Phantasmagoria 1 - 05/03/15 04:02 AM

Starcom is right, Winfrey. Those two games are a real bargain from GOG, but the sale won't last much longer. HAPPY GAMING!

Thanks sanford..... went with the GOG version.. and and played on my win 8.1. loved the game... hated the last very last part where the video took over... don't want to ruin it for anyone but that was disappointing after such a fun game.

Re: Phantasmagoria 1 - 05/03/15 08:34 PM

I don't exactly agree with you, Winfrey, about the ending. It was a little difficult, but with a little practice, I finally arrived at the ending scene. I even own the original Prima Walkthrough book, which sure helped me a lot in getting through the ending.
Phantasmagoria 2 is really good also, a lot of "goriness", but a great story. I have played this game over and over through the years, and I STILL enjoy it to this day. I happen to have the original boxed copy, which still runs on my WIN XP computer, but it might be easier for you to buy this game for the GOG special price of $2.39. for a limited time only

Re: Phantasmagoria 1 - 05/04/15 06:29 AM

If Winfrey has the CDs there is not much reason to buy the game again with the new installer. It is free and it will give better results than the GOG version.

If the CD version of P2 still works on Winfrey's PC, I certainly agree with you, Collector.

It has been a long time since I played the game but isn't there a way to play a different ending? It seems like just before the traditional ending you could trigger what they call "the chase" where you try to evade the husband by running through the house. I found that to be the most exciting part, but one that most players did not experience.

"If Adrienne gets killed (this is the only chapter when she may die), the game is restored to the point where the player can make different choice. Note that there is more than one way to act in the dark room. Instead of grabbing the book immediately, Adrienne can run away from the room -- but not away from the house -- thus making the chase much more thrilling and scary, through rooms and secret passages, with dead bodies lying in the way ... However, she must return to the dark room anyway to get the book, so I suggest that on your first game you take the book as soon as possible, and when you get more experienced with the game, try running away. The outcome is always the same, no matter what you do ... "
