Flash Drive

Why does my Toshiba-16gb flash drive bring up a box that says "still in use" then another box that says "do you want to force a dismount" when I move it from my device to my computer when the device I have removed it from was actually off. To me there is no safer way to remove the drive than when the device is off.I use my HP-16gb flash drive exactly the same way on the same 2 devices and don't have the boxes come up.
I should say the Toshiba works fine after clicking the boxes but it is 2 extra steps I don't have with the HP.

If I understand you correctly, you turned off the computer while the flash drive was still plugged into it. Then you removed the flash drive and plugged it into a different computer -- and the flash drive threw up those weird boxes with "still in use" and "do you want to force a dismount."

I haven't seen that on my flash drives, but I always delete any pre-installed software that comes with the flash drive -- and usually format the flash drive too -- before using it.

My guess is that it's this pre-installed software that is causing this behavior. Maybe your other flash drive doesn't have pre-installed software -- or uses a different type that doesn't kick up a fuss when you remove it from a computer that's been turned off.

This is the sort of question Inland would be better able to answer.

A couple of notes:
1). It really doesn't matter if the device I remove it from is off or on,I still get the boxes. But it is strange that "still in use" comes up if the device was off.
2). There is no installed software I can see.

1. That could be because the software was keeping track of the state of the drive. That you see it happening with the Toshiba flash drive and not HP flash drive suggests something is different with the Toshiba flash drive.

2. I've seen the installed software on flash drives in Linux and Mac when it wasn't visible in Windows. That's one reason I format my USB drives before using them.

As I said, it's just my guess that the problem is caused by the software. There might be some other difference in the way the drives are made.

Reformating to NTSF seems to have solved the problem.
