Saves Location Dreamfall Chapters

Saves Location Dreamfall Chapters - 12/06/16 06:42 AM

Hi.

I'm leaving this game for now and plan to uninstall it but would like to stash my "saves to date" in a safe place for when I might re-install it some time in the future.
But, although I know where the game files are on my machine, I can't see anything amongst them resembling save games.
[And I've looked in the usual places like "Roaming" etc.]

Can anyone help, please ??

I have the GOG release and am playing on a Win7 Enterprise 64-bit machine.

Thanks.

I found this through googling - maybe it's somewhere around here?

Look in %APPDATA%\RedThreadGames\DreamfallChapters\ for the Windows version.

Let us know. wave12

Hi Marian.

That was the first place I looked and although the folder is there, there's nothing in it !!

But if I start the game up I can load any of the saves I've made woozy12

So they must be "somewhere".

Mind boggling, eh ?? lol12

Cheers.

Apparently the saves are in the registry as well as in a save folder.

http://redthreadgames.com/forum/topic/757-save-game-locations/

Quote:
Windows: Open "regedit.exe" (most easily found by searching for it in the start menu): Go to "HKCU\Software\Red Thread Games\Dreamfall Chapters"

Mac: "~/Library/Preferences" in a file named "unity.Red Thread Games.Dreamfall Chapters.plist"

Linux: "~/.config/unity3d/Red Thread Games/Dreamfall Chapters"

Quote:
I found my saves in c:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\LocalLow\Red Thread Games\Dreamfall Chapters\Autosave\

(Win7)

The save location is probably dictated by the game engine, and is not the choice of the developer.

Hi Jenny100 - And thanks for responding.

I opened "regedit.exe" and did look at everything shown - although nothing there started with "HKCU".

Also, I noticed the AppData path shown in the quote includes "LocalLow".
I don't have that either. Mine is just called "Local".

I wonder if it would be worth asking at GOG ??

[It's so ridiculous !! mad12 ]

HKCU is a registry abbreviation for HKEY_CURRENT_USER

HKCR = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKU = HKEY_USERS
HKCC = HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG

Here's a more complete explanation
http://mintywhite.com/vista/hkcr-hkcu-hklm-hku-hkcc-registry-root-keys/

The AppData folder should have three folders:

Local
LocalLow
Roaming

These are part of Windows and all of them should be there.

There are different AppData folders in the different user folders. I've had some games (mostly casuals) use the AppData folder in the Default user folder so check there too.

Yes it is ridiculous. Windows 95/98 just put the saves in the game folder. Even XP put them in the My Documents folder. With modern Windows the saves can be all over the place.

You may want to reconsider uninstalling the game and just drag the game's desktop shortcut somewhere off the desktop to store it out of sight. I wouldn't want to have to replay the first Chapter (arguably the worst one unless you happen to like Stark).

I'm back - to apologise !!!! blush

Of course I have a LocalLow folder - and I have now found the saves in there.
[They are called Auto Saves" so I haven't found my manual saves. But I don't care. I'm just grateful to have found SOME saves lol12

[ I think too much searching must have dented my brain rolleyes12 ]

Anyway, I've now copied those Auto Saves to another place and uninstalled the game.
And during the uninstall, I was asked if I wanted to keep my saved games. smashpc

Phew !!

So thank you, and Marian too, very much indeed. Your help is always absolutely appreciated kissy12

Cheers.

Re: Saves Location Dreamfall Chapters - 12/06/16 06:28 PM

The "registry saves" probably tell the game where the saves are, and what constitutes a save -- something like the cat file in old Sierra games like GK1. Without the "registry saves" Dreamfall Chapters wouldn't recognize it had any saves in its subfolder of the LocalLow folder (or wherever it put them).

If the game gave you an option to keep your saves when you uninstalled, there shouldn't be a problem unless you try to use the saves on a different computer.
