GOG Downloads.

GOG Downloads. - 11/09/17 11:13 PM

I'm in contact with GOG about this but just wondered if anyone else is having a similar experience ??

None of my latest game downloads have had the customary "Yellow GOG Box" and all of them have had "[1]" included in their file names.
And if I try install any, I get the Windows message "Windows cannot open this file".

The first advice I was offered was to use the Galaxy facility instead of downloading via my browser. But I don't want to do that so I'm waiting for further help.

And in any case, the last game I downloaded that had the problem had a note against it on site stating the game couldn't be downloaded via Galaxy !!

I've seen that "[1]" on the end, but I can rename the file to remove it, either in the download box before downloading or after downloading. Even if you don't rename the file, the "[1]" doesn't affect functionality of the installer.

I don't know why the "[1]" appears, but it's something on GOG's end. Maybe something to do with how they back up files?

I don't remember the "Yellow GOG Box" -- I might if I saw it.

"Windows cannot open this file" may mean that Windows or your web browser (usually IE) or possibly your antivirus stripped the ".exe" off the end of the file (ostensibly to "protect" your computer). If you right-click the file, you can check whether the file has an .exe on the end -- and add it back if it was removed. Normally Windows hides the .exe extension so it's hard to tell if it's there unless you right-click and check the file's Properties.

Also make sure GOG didn't change your download to a Mac or Linux download. I've noticed that happening occasionally.

Hi Jenny100 smile

Sorry I couldn't back here until now !!

Well, GOG has not "come up with the goods" so far, sad to say. The game is STILL not working.

I've done everything they have suggested. And another couple of things were sent to me today - as listed below - which I will try later.

I did do the changing of the file name and that didn't work.

And off my own bat, I also re-downloaded the files using Firefox instead of IE - and the files did download with the correct names and the game did install - but it won't launch !!!! mad]

The next things GOG Support are suggesting are :

Use "Run as Administrator" to install and to start the game.

Re-install the game AND add it to your anti-virus/firewall software's exception/trusted list.

And if neither of those work ....
"Please try to follow advices from PC Gaming Wiki:
https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Risen_2:_Dark_Waters#Risen_2_Fails_to_Launch_.2F_Hangs_on_launch."

I am simply astounded that this game is being so difficult. I played it when it was first released and had no problems at all !!
Unfortunately, I no longer have that copy.

A very mad Mad duh

I haven't played Risen 2, but here are some changes I made to another game from GOG that wouldn't start until I made the changes:

Quote:
Right-click the game shortcut
Click Properties
Select the compatibility tab
Make sure the following are selected:

Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
Run this program as an administrator

Save changes.

It wasn't necessary to change Windows version from Windows 7 to a different Windows on the compatibility tab.

Without using the "Run this program as an administrator" option, the game would start, but none of the cut scenes would play.

I'll keep looking around for solutions specific to Risen 2, but for now that's all I can suggest.

That Wiki also talks about:

Quote:
Install the NVIDIA PhysX System Software

On the Steam forums, some folks found that the issue was PhysX. After they took care of that and rebooted, the game launched.

Thank you, Marian, but .... Yep .... Been there. Done that.

Didn't do the trick for me duh

At this very moment, I'm trying something else off my own bat and if it works I'll be back to let you know wave2

bravo joy bravo joy bravo

AT LAST !!!!

Up and running - and with the upgrade installed also !!!!

By using ONLY Firefox to download the files from GOG and following ALL the instructions from the Support People - including the VITAL "Run As Administrator" for every action taken once the files were downloaded, I can now actually play this game.

Re: GOG Downloads. - 11/12/17 02:46 AM

Yes. Definitely worth the messing about for me because I really like this game AND it's one of the "not that many" RPGs I can actually play right through to THE END .... although with GOD MODE help, I ought to add whistle

So I am a Happy Bunny once again !!

[Or, to be more precise, a Happy Ancient Granny Bunny lol]
