Tivola Physicus will not play on my Win98SE computer

Tivola Physicus will not play on my Win98SE computer - 11/13/17 02:58 AM

I've been trying to replay three old Tivola games, Physicus, Bioscopia, and Chemicus on my Win98SE unit. Each of these games comes with a different version of Quicktime and it is necessary to uninstall any newer versions to get the games to play the .mov files.

Unfortunately, I can't get Physicus to play the .mov files and in fact I lose all sound from my Audigy card and must reinstall the driver to hear anything.
Now if I don't try to use the game but just play the games .mov files using the QuickTimePlayer.exe that comes with the game, the .mov files play perfectly. There is no "damage" to the Audigy card connection. There is something in the game's Physicus.exe (Macromedia Director) program that kills the Win98SE connection to the Audigy card.

I can't find anything via Google on this problem or any patches for the game. If anyone has information about this problem or is able to play Physicus correctly, I'd really like to hear about it.

I don't have any suggestions to offer, but I did find this comment on an old Adventure Gamers thread, which I thought was interesting:

Yes, Physicus works on Vista, and the much newer Windows 7. I haven't yet gotten the chance to try Chemicus or Bioscopia on vista or 7, but I'm sure they work considering they came out after Physicus by the same company.

I don't remember which version of QuickTime was used with Physicus, but with some QuickTime versions, there was a "QuickTime Safe Mode" that you could find using the QuickTime icon in Control Panel.

There's an archived Troubleshooting page for Riddle of the Sphinx that had some tips on QuickTime settings in Control Panel ***here***. The tips on this site were for QuickTime 3 or 4. But QuickTime 2 also had some settings you could change using the QuickTime icon in Control Panel.

It is possible that the Creative Audigy sound card is the problem. I think that card did not exist when the games were created.

Well as a workaround I've been able to install and play the game under WinXP. The problem is that it was necessary to uninstall QuickTime 7 and install the version on the game disk QT3.

Also the game really needs to be run at 800x600 but as my desktop is set for 1600x1200, running the game at the required resolution badly messes up my desktop when going back to 1600x1200.

I'd still like to hear from anyone playing these games under Win98SE with an Creative Audigy sound card. That seems to be a critical factor.

Maybe something like this will help put your desktop icons back the way they were:

There are also utilities that are supposed to restore your icon positions, like "Icon Restore" and "DesktopOK."

I've never used an Audigy with Windows 98.
The closest was an SB Live.

Does the problem happen with all games that use QuickTime 3 or only with Physicus?

Are you using drivers that shipped with the card or drivers from the Creative website?

Are the drivers you're using WDM or VXD type?
