hardware acceleration disabled - 02/01/18 05:06 PM

all of a sudden this morning my screen went black and I restarted my computer. When it restarted, all my icons on my desktop were huge. I changed my screen resolution as it was now 600 x800 or something like that. the desktop looks better now and I can get on my sites. However, when I try and play my solitaire game now (which worked fine last night) it says hardware acceleration disabled or not supported. game is running in software rendering mode. What do I need to do to get my hardware acceleration back on?

Also, when I tried to play Night of the Rabbit, I could get into the game, but it was choppy. so I went to dxdiag and found this. Is my video card driver not working?

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/01/18 05:29 PM

Strange that there is nothing at all listed about your video card.

It looks like you have no video card drivers.

I looked up the Device Identifier, which is the only thing your dxdiag listed about your card and found this thread from 2014

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic...install-fixed-/

I know it's an old thread, but maybe the advice about reinstalling the drivers in Safe Mode would still be valid.

Do you have Windows 10? If you do, Windows 10 might have installed new drivers that weren't compatible with your video card.

You could also try reverting to previous Nvidia drivers, described here
https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/how-to-rollback-nvidia-drivers-in-windows-10/

Is this a laptop?

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/01/18 05:42 PM

I am running windows 7. It is not a laptop. It was working great last night, except I noticed some choppiness with one of my games. also, I noticed that I couldn't play some of the videos of my grandson that were sent to me - it was just a picture and the video wouldn't play. Do I need to buy a new video card - and if so, which one is good? Thanks for your help.

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/01/18 06:02 PM

I would definitely try reinstalling your video card drivers in Safe Mode as Jenny suggests. But since this happened quite suddenly, it sound to me like your video card has failed.

Do you know what video card is in this desktop? Or is it integrated video in your processor such as a Core i3 or Core i5? If you need to replace it, there are a bunch of factors that need to be considered including the wattage of your power supply.

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/01/18 06:03 PM

It's possible the video card went bad.
But before buying a new one, I'd want to make sure it's not an issue with the drivers becoming corrupt.

Also before buying a new video card I'd want to try reseating the old card (pull it out and push it back in). I did have one work itself loose, though that was years ago and I'm not sure if it's still a concern on newer computers.

As for choosing a new video card, what type of games do you play?
What was your current video card (was it Geforce GTX 770 ?) and was it sufficient for your use before it went bad? or would you want a faster card?

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/01/18 06:42 PM

Drac probably knows more about this computer than I do - she has helped me so much. I think I just want to buy a new video card. i don't know which one though and I would have to order it. I just play adventure games. My current video card was a Geforce gtx 650. What would be similar to work in my windows 7?

I wish I could remember more about this computer! Do you know what the wattage of your power supply is?

no, I don't remember. I tried to find the post on MM as you had it all listed for me, but, I can't find it.

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/01/18 07:29 PM

Well, it should be good enough to support a Geforce GTX 650 if that's what was working before.

I found this thread about upgrading a GTX 650 to a 1050 and they say the 1050 actually consumes less power.

Thanks, Jenny! I was going to go looking for that Tom's Hardware article which I remember reading.

This link is to the the 1050 video cards at Amazon.

And the 1050's at Newegg.

Just to make sure that I don't screw up, if I ordered this from Amazon, will it work for my windows 7 64 bit computer? https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Supp...ywords=gtx+1050

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/01/18 10:59 PM

Whether it will work or not is based on your motherboard, not your operating system. It needs a PCI-E interface and I am going to assume that is the same interface as your GTX 650.

If you could give us the brand and model of your computer, we can look up your motherboard specs.

I don't know if this will help or not, but this is my dx diag. It's a lot of information and I don't know if it will be helpful or not.

also, I think this one is cheaper. Should I just get this one? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/evga-nvidia...p?skuId=6092688

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/02/18 12:00 AM

It's cheaper, but it's also a pretty low end card. It's a GT and the low end 1030, not the 1050. It's barely better than your old one. But if your budget needs to stay cheaper, it'll do.

It took a little digging, but that did help. It says you have a PCI-E x16 controller and the connection you need. I figured it did, but I always hate to assume anything.

Drac, please please please tell me what card to buy. I have been looking all day and it is all Greek to me. I don't want one much better than the one that I have, as I think my computer game buying days are over, I just want to play the ones that I have. Please advise me.

Well, then we are down to your budget, mbday! I know about your issues, so I totally understand. Let me know what you can afford and I'll help you decide.

Check this page out at Amazon... any of these cards will do and even that GT 1030 is cheaper than at Best Buy. Scroll down to where there are 5 or 6 six cards in comparison.

Posted By: Jenny100

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/02/18 03:29 PM

"Low profile" means it's made to fit in those computers with tiny cases instead of regular size desktop cases.

You should be able to use a low profile card in a normal computer case as long as it has the right bracket. Here's a thread where someone asked whether it would fit.

http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/11/371918937268392189/

The card at Amazon that you linked to seems to have pictures of two different brackets.

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/02/18 04:52 PM

there is also a passive - which one should I get? the low profile or the passive? really, this is all Greek to me and I sure appreciate all the help. Thanks.
Posted By: Jenny100

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/02/18 04:59 PM

Passive means no fan. The cards are often clocked lower (slower card) than the versions with a fan. Passive cards also mean you have to be extra careful that your computer case has adequate ventilation. Unless you have plenty of fans in your case, or intend to install a couple, I wouldn't get the passive. There's a reason most video cards come with fans.

I notice that model also has the option for "single slot" which has the normal form factor as well as a fan.
Unless you have a tiny case and need the low profile version, I'd recommend the "single slot" model.

Hubby and I are having a hard time. I finally got the new video card and we tried to install it today and the plug doesn't fit. Plus my old one had a fan on the bottom of it and this one doesn't have that. did I get the wrong card? what can I do to get the plug to fit? please help.

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/10/18 07:35 PM

What do you mean by plug? Are you talking about the interface between the card and the motherboard? Are you trying to insert it into the correct slot which should be the same one your old card was in? If you take out the old card, and compare the interface, are they the same? They should both be PCI-e.

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/10/18 08:03 PM

There are two plugs we are wondering about. There was a plug that plugged into the video driver, but, also the plug in the back to put the cord in is different. Hubby is trying to get an old cord to work now by taking out some of the pins. crapski.

according to hubby, this board will not work. Please advise me. the 4 - pronged plug that went to the card is missing.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/10/18 08:53 PM

This is all kind of confusing... so the card is inserted into the motherboard, right??? Are you talking about a plug for the video card which will run the fan? That will come from the power supply, not the motherboard. If your old video card had a fan, are you saying it was not plugged into the power supply?

Don't understand what you are saying here at all..

Do you mean a plug that went into the video card? A plug in the back of what? I'm looking at the pictures of that video card Jenny linked to and I don't see where it has a need for a 4-pin plug from the power supply.

Do I have this right or is there something I'm missing?

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/10/18 09:58 PM

Quote:
the 4 - pronged plug that went to the card is missing.

When a video card is a high performance type and needs extra power, there is a 4-pin power connector that goes from the computer's power supply to the card.

Low end cards don't need the 4-pin connector and get all the power they need through the PCI-E slot.

Are you saying the DVI connectors on the video card don't match your monitor cable? This is the picture Amazon had:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61shYScafBL._SL1200_.jpg

Wikipedia page of DVI connections
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:DVI_Connector_Types.svg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI#Connector

One other thing to check is whether you've plugged the cable into the DVI port that gets preference. I think it's the connector closest to the motherboard that gets preference.

If your computer has onboard graphics, make sure that the computer isn't expecting the onboard graphics to be what's getting used.

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/10/18 10:20 PM

If mbday ordered the one you linked to, Jenny, it doesn't need the 4 pin connector from the power supply. It also has 2 DVI ports on the back as you linked to, so I don't understand why she said, there is no place to plug the monitor in. Unless her monitor has an older VGA connection?

Multiple DVI ports getting a preference is a new one to me! Both of mine work equally well.

Lots of confusing information, so I hope we hear back from her soon.

Re: hardware acceleration disabled - 02/10/18 10:35 PM

Hubby said that it is a VGA connection to my monitor. I don't know how he knew that, but, that is what he said. so, do I just need a different plug in thingy? I am wondering why there was a big plug inside the computer that went to the video card and this one doesn't have that.

That's because this new video card doesn't need one. It is powered from the motherboard itself. You can get a VGA to DVI adapter to plug in your older monitor.

VGA ports look like this

There's no way you could fit a VGA cable on a DVI port.

Now if your monitor requires an analog connection (DVD-I) and doesn't work with DVI-D (digital) connectors, you might get the connectors confused. I haven't seen a monitor that couldn't work with DVI-D in years though.

What model monitor do you have?

Here's more about DVI connectors

If your monitor can't accept a digital signal, you'll have to be very careful about what video card you buy. I think all the current model video cards are DVI-D like the one you just bought.

I am wondering why there was a big plug inside the computer that went to the video card and this one doesn't have that.

If you're talking about the extra connector, as seen on this card,

the card you bought doesn't need that connector because it doesn't consume much power, so it gets all it needs through the PCI-E slot and doesn't need the extra connector. The card you're replacing consumed more power and it did need the connector.

Hope that solves your problem.
From what you've told us, it sounds like the right thing.

FYI--sometimes if you change a video card the new card will require a small 4-pin connector from the power supply where the old card didn't have that connector. If your power supply doesn't have that connector fear not because they make an adapter to convert a regular 4-pin fan type connector to that small connector. Its only a couple of bucks and good to have on hand.

But this new video card did not require a connection from the power supply. I have used those little adapters and they have come in handy for me a couple of times.

Or just a simple VGA to DVI adapter like this one...
