Broken Sword 3 won't install - 08/19/18 01:14 PM

I recently got Broken Sword 3 and am having problems installing it. I'm on Windows 10. I put in the disc and it sounds like something is happening but nothing comes up at all. There are no marks on the disc. Could anyone help please, thank you smile

welcome to GameBoomers.

It's possible that the CD has copy protection that Windows 10 does not like. I will just say that if it continues to be a problem, I would suggest getting the game as a download from GOG here - that will solve the problem nicely.

Maybe one of the techies here will have another suggestion for you, though.

I have nothing to add to what Marian said... This game on original CD does have copy protection which may be blocked by Windows 10. There are noCD options out there, but can't guarantee they are safe downloads. GOG might be your best option as the copy protection has been removed.

If you're expecting Autorun to pop up, that's been disabled on Windows.

"Won't install" is different from "installs but won't play."

Are you able to browse the game disc using Windows Explorer? If so, look for a Setup.exe file to double-click to start the installation. If simple double-clicking the Setup.exe file on the disc doesn't work, you may have to use compatibility mode to "Run As Administrator" and set compatibility to an earlier version of Windows before double-clicking will start the installation. For more complete instructions, check
https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/set-compatibility-mode-windows-10
and scroll down to where it says "How to run an App in Compatibility Mode."

If you have managed to install the game but it won't run, the problem is probably related to DRM, but could also be related to Windows compatibility.

The US version of the game has StarForce v3. Any version of Windows later than XP will block installation of StarForce v3 DRM, which will prevent the game from starting.

The UK version of Broken Sword 3 has SecuROM DRM. I don't know if it's a version that's now blocked by Windows or not.

A NoCD may help if you're able to install the game, but won't help if you can't first install the game.

You may also have to adjust the game shortcut to run with Compatibility mode. If you have the UK version of the game, you should probably try that before looking for a NoCD. See the above link at laptopmag.

On the tab pictured ***here*** the checkboxes for
"Run this program in compatibility mode for" (try XP SP3 in the dropdown)
"Disable display settings on high DPI settings"
and
"Run this program as an Administrator"

A modern download version would be easier to use, as Marian and Draclvr have suggested.

Thank you all for your help, I set compatibility to an earlier version of Windows and it's now working. Thanks again smile
