The first thing would be to try installing the updates while any unessential programs and services are disabled. Here's how to do this:

Right-click directly on the Windows icon. (Located on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.)
Select run from this menu, then type msconfig box and hit Enter
After the window pops up, click Selective Startup on the General tab and click to clear the Load Startup Itemscheck box
Then, go to the Services tab. Check the box that says Hide all Microsoft services and then select Disable All
After this, you will get a message that the computer needs to restart and we can restart the computer

After restarting the computer, we'll want to go through the Windows update steps again to see how this goes:

1. Press the buttons "Home (Windows symbol)"+ "x" on your keyboard, or hover over the bottom left corner of the screen and Right-click
2. Click on "Control Panel" in that menu
3. In this Window, make sure that the 'View By' option is select to either large small icons and then select 'Troubleshooting'
4. Under 'System and Security' select 'Fix problems with Windows Update'
5. In the next window, select 'Next' to start the process. The Window should ask you if you'd like to run the troubleshooter as an administrator after this, and we should select this option if it shows up.
6. The system should then detect and solve any Windows update problems.

After running this troubleshooter, please let me know if the troubleshooter gives any messages about problems that were unable to be corrected.

Otherwise, we can then run Windows update again after this and hopefully this can find some files that look like they might not have been able to be installed before:

1. Press the buttons "Home (Windows symbol)"+ "x" on your keyboard, or hover over the bottom left corner of the screen and Right-click
2. Select ‘Control Panel’ then ‘System and Security.’
3. Click on ‘Windows Update’ and check for updates. If it finds any important updates, we can go ahead and install those.

Either way, we can go back in to the first steps I listed after trying the update steps again, and choose the Enable All button again under the services tab as well as the Load Startup Items option under the General tab, which will put things back to starting up normally for you.

Please do let me know how this goes as well Susan, and thanks again for all of your help.

Sincerely,

Tim

Is your question about where the Windows Icon is? Since you have Windows 8, you will need to be out of the Start screen. Once out of there, it is in the lower left and looks like 4 white window panes.
