louis koot's saved games - 09/28/18 03:45 PM

I am trying to access Louis' saved games for Lighthouse Dark Being, but when I try to open the file Windows tells me it cannot be accessed as I may not have the necessary permissions. Can I get around this. I am hopeless with techie stuff, so I would appreciate any answers in babyspeak LOL!

If you're still having problems after Mad's help please be more specific about what step you're getting the message about permissions.

Were you able to download the Lighthouse_saves.rar file?

Were you able to extract the Lighthouse_saves.rar file to get the Lighthouse_saves folder with the "Read Me First.doc" file and Saves folder that are included inside?

Are you getting the message about permissions when you start the game and try to load a save from the game menu? Or do you get the message earlier?

Hi Jenny100 smile

As I had downloaded the saves without any problem some time ago (just in case I might get stuck myself when I played the game lol) and couldn't think why dorish wasn't able to, I have offered to zip the saves folder and email it to her.

Cheers.

OK. I wasn't sure where Dorish was getting stuck.

If Dorish is trying to "run" the .rar file through the web browser instead of downloading it first, it might produce an error. I don't know why Windows would call it a "permissions" error, but Windows has been known to lie about the nature of its errors.

The saved games of Louis are made with the GOG version of the game, with ScummV.
If you are playing the original game the saved games probally won't work.

Thanks for that warning, Lion_1251 smile

[I'm assuming dorish, like so many of us, is playing the GOG version as I've not heard otherwise.]

Here I am again. I have managed to download and extract the save files, next question is how do I insert the one I want into the game?---I told you I was hopeless at this kind of thing.

Did you receive the email I sent you - with the zipped saves, dorish ??

If so, there was a "Read Me" instructions file included smile

Another way to use the new saves from Louis would be :-

1. make a list of what you have in inventory.

2. Take out the existing save folder from the game files - which is holding all the saves YOU have made - (and stash it somewhere safe) and just replace it with the save folder from Louis - which will give you the ones HE has made.

3. Then launch the game and you will see all the saves from Louis sitting there.
And you can just choose which one would be the most appropriate to load.

4. Check what is in the inventory of the new save you've loaded.

Did you find your game's save folder, Dorish?
Louis' readme says the save folder is in the Lighthouse game folder,
which should be in the C:\GOG Games folder by default.

Okay, this is where I'm up to --I downloaded and extracted Louis' files, found the save I need, put it into a new folder and changed the save number to be the next one in the game, but I can't find where my save file is on my computer. I downloaded the game with GOG Galaxy. Jenny 100, I searched that name you gave me, but it didn't bring up my saved games.

I don't have the GOG version of Lighthouse, so Mad would be a better source of information for exactly where the GOG version of Lighthouse puts its saves (which could be different from where they'd go if you used ScummVM with the CD version).

Windows Search only searches a limited number of locations on your hard drive by default. Instead of trying to configure it to search everything, you're better off using Windows Explorer to go directly to your C:\GOG Games folder and look for a Lighthouse folder to see if there's a save folder inside.

If there's no save folder in C:\GOG Games\Lighthouse
then Mad (or someone else who owns the GOG version) will have to help since I don't own the game. The default save folder for ScummVM games is
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\ScummVM\Saved games\
but GOG has almost certainly changed that.

Thank you Jenny 100. The gog version uses Scumm V m ---that's what appears on my screen when I start the game. For now I'm taking a break for a couple of days as I am getting a royal headache. I have downloaded lamplight city and going to try that--- no inventory to miss picking up.

I don't have this game from GOG but I do use the GOG Galaxy so I tried looking for saved games and I couldn't find them anywhere.

Re: louis koot's saved games - 10/01/18 07:53 PM

I am playing the GOG release (which uses ScummVM) on a Win7 64bit machine.

I downloaded it via Firefox. [I don't use GOG Galaxy.]

My downloads (from any source) automatically go to a folder named Downloads on my D Drive.

Once the setup files for Lighthouse had downloaded to my D Drive, I created a folder called GOG GAMES on my C Drive and moved the files there.
I installed the game to C Drive.

My route to my saves is :

C Drive
GOG Games
Lighthouse
Saves

[I use both C and D drives for my games as both are very big drives and afford me plenty of space.]

If you install the game directly with GOG Galaxy then you probally find the savegames here:

C---Programm files (x86)----GOG Galaxy----Games----Lighthouse-----Saved games

Re: louis koot's saved games - 10/04/18 05:52 AM

The GOG version uses ScummVM and the save files are not compatible with the original interpreters. Also the DOS interpreter and Windows interpreter saves are not compatible with each other. Further, Sierra SCI games are version specific. In other words saves from v1.1 and those from v2.0 are not interchangeable. Saves with the original interpreters will be made in the game's folder. Unless specified elsewhere the ScummVM saves will be in the location Jenny posted.

All of this does not mean that it is hopeless, just that you need to know what interpreter and version of the game that the saves were made with as well as what interpreter and version of the game you have.

That said, it looks like you have the GOG (probably ScummVM) and if the downloaded saves were not made with ScummVM they will not work.

Then the saves would end up in the VirtualStore, not under Program Files.

Thank you everyone who tried to help me. I bit the bullet yesterday and uninstalled the game. I feel much better now. When and if I reinstall it, I will play VERY carefully, and make sure I don't miss any key inventory items LOL!
