Malwarebytes Pups

Malwarebytes Pups - 06/17/23 03:38 PM

I run a scan and it shows 2 lines of each of these:

PUP.Optional.SystemRequirementsLab

C\:USERS\COMPUTER\DOWNLOADS\DETECTION.EXE

How do I find where or what this file is? I can't find a place in Malwarebytes to see a list of quarantined items and where the problem locations are. That's what I am asking. Where in Malwarebytes can I see something like this? EDIT: Okay, I found where to look at a list of quarantined items and THAT is the file, so my question becomes, What is that file???

A scan ran at 2:45 am and was fine. I initiated this scan at 10:10 am and this pops up. Nothing downloaded between those hours. Norton shows no issues. Norton has a place I can look to see all quarantined items and the exact files.

I can't tell you exactly what that specific line refers to, but PUPs stands for potentially unwanted programs. I googled the following:

Quote
PUPs, or Potentially Unwanted Programs, are programs that may include advertising, toolbars, and pop-ups that are unrelated to the software you downloaded. PUPs often come bundled with other software that you installed.

Are PUPs considered malware?

Detections categorized as PUPs are not considered as malicious as other forms of malware, and may even be regarded by some as useful. Malwarebytes detects potentially unwanted programs for several reasons, including: They may have been installed without the user's consent.

Thanks Marian. This doesn't appear to be a file though at all. I don't know. I quarantined it but I wish I knew what I'm quarantining. I hate when I go to do something and it doesn't work because somewhere along the way it was quarantined. I have a Myst download from GOG that I just recently noticed (while looking in my Norton files) was quarantined by Norton. I have a few Myst games downloaded so I'm not even sure which one it is but someday when I go to play that particular game, I'll find out.

oldbroad, I've been gone all day working an event at the horse rescue. Just got home and saw this. I was able to find this, but didn't read all the way through it. See if anything here helps...

System requirements lab comes from the website "Can You Run it."

Okay, thanks. So it appears to be PCGameBenchmark that I downloaded last month to check some game out. I scanned it then and it was okay then but may not be okay anymore. Does that sound right? Is the quarantine good enough? I did not understand most of what I read.

I didn't understand it all either. But, yes, that appears to be it. Since it's classified as a PUP - POTENTIALLY unwanted program - you are fine and the quarantine is more than OK. If you get it again after running that PCGAMEBenchmark, it will be the same thing. No need to worry.
