===[**WCF**]=== Chain crypt - Bout 58 - 09/15/12 10:38 PM

welcomeBy way of reminder, the object of this game is to solve the clue presented by the previous poster and then set your own clue.

Anything from the (worldwide) crossword arena is acceptable by way of clue style, but if you stray from the pure path beware the scourge of... ...Pandora's WET NOODLE! scared

The puzzle could be an old favourite or something of your own making. Don't be shy: this is for everyone, not just the old hands!

There is nothing to prevent (say) a couple of related clues if offering a single clue cramps your style.

If there are multiple answers involved, there is no restriction against one person solving all and the solver of the final clue/part is the one who goes next.

Obviously you need to await confirmation of a correct answer before posting your own puzzle, but please then do so reasonably promptly: if having answered correctly you are not going to be able to set a follow-up clue within about the next 24 hours, please pass your turn to someone else so that the game does not stall.

To save the poor demented solvers from excessive brain damage, hardwall you should consider giving a hint as to letters when the question is set, unless the answer is relatively short/easy so that provision of a letter hint at the outset would spoil the sport!

If no-one is biting within about 24 hours you are encouraged to start dropping additional hints.

To try to give everyone a fair crack of the whip, the immediately previous setter is asked not to post a solution to the current clue within the first 24 hours.

The weighty trophy to be passed to whoever successfully solves your clue is the jewel-encrusted World Clue Federation Championship Belt ===[**WCF**]===

Constructive criticism and cheerful badinage are to be expected,
not to mention a certain amount of national rivalry, but above all, have a bit of fun! rah catrub

The current title-holder Sherlock will post her offering shortly.

Isn't "Monday evening, perhaps", only an example
of "weeknight", not a definition?
A bit like "The Hilton, perhaps" is not a definition
of "hotel".

Just checking....

Re: ===[**WCF**]=== Chain crypt - Bout 58 - 09/18/12 02:05 PM

Koala, thank you for the belt, and for even delivering it right side up! wink

Denis, I think "the Hilton, perhaps" would be acceptable as meaning "hotel" for crossword clue purposes, and prompts this clue (which is probably too easy):

Perhaps Iliad disclosing perhaps Odyssey? No, quite the opposite! (8)

Is that same as "cryptic crossword clue purposes"?
I still don't thing it's legal as "definition" in a crypic clue...

Re: ===[**WCF**]=== Chain crypt - Bout 58 - 09/18/12 05:21 PM

"the Hilton, perhaps" is a perfectly fine direct for "hotel". Really, what else would you think of? smile

Re: ===[**WCF**]=== Chain crypt - Bout 58 - 09/18/12 06:14 PM

OK; happy to learn that...
Always thought you could use such as "charade",
with a definition, like:
Perhaps The Hilton inn ; inn being definition.

Early second day hint: "Perhaps Iliad" is the direct, and the answer is a word which I did not realise has this meaning (more usually having musical connotations).

Re: ===[**WCF**]=== Chain crypt - Bout 58 - 09/20/12 04:44 PM

The clue could have been simply "perhaps Odyssey discloses perhaps Iliad," but I reversed it to make it less obvious, and therefore the vice versa aspect needed stating.

Perhaps Iliad disclosing perhaps Odyssey? No, quite the opposite! (8)

"rhapsody" IS intact within the clue, but the verb "disclosing" indicates that the hiding was done in "perhaps Iliad". Not such an egregious error, maybe half a lash worth, at most. Adding in "No, quite the opposite" doesn't clearly indicate that the clue should be switched around.

My apologies, Lex. It's dangerous to rely on my memory these days, but if you do make a mistake or two in the future, you've already paid the horrible price.

Re: ===[**WCF**]=== Chain crypt - Bout 58 - 09/27/12 12:05 PM

Denis, you were right to be concerned about sue as the direct as it is a verb and "action" in the sense of a (law) suit cannot be used in that way.
Posted By: CanukDenis

Re: ===[**WCF**]=== Chain crypt - Bout 58 - 09/27/12 01:10 PM

I wasn't sure after seeing this at dictionary.com:

Related Words for : sue
action, litigate, process

Related Words for : action
litigate, process, sue, accomplish, carry out

...with "litigate and process" common to both.

And then, I've seen clues where verbs are "made up";
like "I'll action you" instead of "I'll take action against you"...
