Brit xword - 03/24/13 07:16 PM

Haven't done one of these for a while, so here are a few from a recent paper:

* 1. CND marcher, for example, and what one carried? (6) - banner

* 2. Bad luck in race - she and he'd fallen (4,6) - hard cheese

* 3. Old fashioned anaesthetist, 64 maybe? (6,6) - square number

* 4. Embarrassed, being wrong about hard misleading clue (3,7) - red herring

* 5. Beast about to take home Sophia Loren perhaps (8) - brunette

* 6. River in Twilight, not Eyck's last (5) - Indus

* 7. Artists, by implication, in rock band? (4,7) (- hoping someone can explain the full justification for this one!) - Dire Straits

5. Beast about to take home Sophia Loren perhaps (8)

Sophia Loren perhaps = brunette (direct)
brute (beast) about (inc. ind.) net (take home) = bru(net)te

Re: Brit xword - 03/25/13 09:09 PM

Hint time: #2 is an anagram, and #7 is at least part anagram I think...

7. Dire Straits smile

The only thing I can think of is that the "dire" in the answer is the anagram indicator. Hence the "implication"(???).

Very unsatisfactory, I agree.

That's my answer Rog, and in the crossword grid it had to be correct.

I was wondering about "rock" being the anagram indicator and "dire" somehow being an anagram of something meaning "by implication."

Re: Brit xword - 03/26/13 07:03 PM

Another hint for the last one: the direct is at the start/on the left.

OK - I'll take it.

Hard cheese - anag (race+she+hed)

Thank you good sir for polishing it off! Possibly not a familiar expression to our friends across the ocean.

I've never heard of it but that doesn't mean it isn't a known phrase o'er here.

Artists, by implication, in rock band? (4,7)

Methinks "by implication" means "as indicated by answer";
the answer being an anagram indicator + fodder.

In a contest, such a clue would be tagged as a "special clue",
and an example given.
