Hunt & Peck

I’ve used a new-fangled 26-key keyboard to type the names of twelve related words, numbered 1-12 in the red squares. Each digit represents the number of keystrokes used on that key for that word. (Spaces, if any, are not indicated.) Can you decipher the words?

#8 was the key. First I tried lily, Ohio and Fiji but couldn't get any of the other answers to work until I tried kiwi. From there on I figured the puzzle was fruity since I started to see workable combinations of letters for the other answers.
