The letters of the answer to the first part of the clue can be transposed to form the answer of the second half of the clue. If you find the first part of the clue is elusive then switch to the second part and try to work your way backwards 
Example: transpose a garment into a tiresome person -> robe - bore
= 1. Transpose worshiped objects into a firm substance
=2. Transpose an aromatic plant into a narrative poem
=3. Transpose an absorbent cloth into a young bird
=4. Transpose mineral matter into distinctive sounds
= 5. Transpose an organ into a planet
=6. Transpose units of land into frighten
=7. Transpose elegant sheets into a paint
=8. Transpose a certain city dweller into a large house
=9. Transpose a private instructor into a fish
=10. Transpose adolescents into a grammatical category
