I'll take a shot at #9. I have an errant brain cell that seems to remember it was an attempt by Charlemagne to standardize the measurement of a foot by using the length of his own foot.

That's not the answer I found, but there IS some debate about what the real answer is. Try a different king. And it's got nothing to do with his foot. whistle

In the 12th century, King Henry I of England fixed the yard as the distance from his nose to the thumb of his out-stretched arm. The foot was defined as 1/3 of that measure. smile
