-1. A woman gave birth to a son when the combined ages of her and her husband was 62. When the
son reached the age his mother was on the day she gave birth, his parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. How old were they when they married, if the mother is 4 years older than the father?

-2. The following words are synonyms for a related set of words. What are the words and their relationship?

Strange, In best condition, Flawless, Smooth, Certain, Pessimistic

-3. A creeper plant is climbing up and around a cylindrical tree trunk in a helical manner. The tree trunk has a height of 600 inches and a circumference of 40 inches. If the creeper covers a vertical distance of 75 inches in one complete twist around the tree trunk, what is the total length of the creeper?

-4. The 8" pizza sells for $ 3.99 at my favorite pizza store. The store claims they have a great deal on the large 12" pizza, which is specially priced at $ 7.18. What is the percent discount the store is offering?

Re: Math Fun - 07/08/18 12:28 AM

M=Mother, F=Father, S=Son
M+M-4=62 : M=33, so F=29

Code:
      26      M=33
      22      F=29
              S=0               S=33

------|---7---NOW-------33--------|

Soooooooooo, since 40-33=7: 26 and 22

I had "perfect" instead of "whole" but they both work. thumbsup grin

3. The length of the creeper after reaching 75"
in height can be thought of as the hypotenuse of a
right triangle with legs, 40" and 75"

Length = sqrt(40^2 + 75^2) = sqrt(1600+5625) = sqrt (7225) = 85"

To reach a height of 600" the creeper must make
8 full twists. So,

length of creeper = 8(85) = 680 inches

What is the percent discount the store is offering?

8" : pi*r^2 = pi*4^2 = 50.3 sq.in.
12": pi*r^2 = pi*6^2 = 113.1 sq.in

If no discount:
50.3 sq.in. = 3.99
113.1 sq.in. = 3.99/50.3 * 113.1 = 8.99

d = discount
8.99/(1+d) = 7.18
8.99 = 7.18 + 7.18d
7.18d = 1.81
d = 1.81/7.18 = .25 (approx.)

So da discount dere, it's 25%

Re: Math Fun - 07/08/18 08:41 PM

Very close, Denis. The discount was taken off the 8.99, not the 7.18 smile

Re: Math Fun - 07/08/18 10:45 PM

Whoops: my 8.99/(1+d) should be 8.99*(1+d).
That'll make the discount ~20.2%

I'll go stand in the corner...but bringing my pizza along happydance

Re: Math Fun - 07/08/18 11:53 PM

I'd like 20% of it. wave
