Nancy Drew 29 Silent Spy

Nancy Drew 29 Silent Spy - 01/06/14 03:38 PM

I absolutely adored this and am not really sure why.
I suppose it is because the puzzles, although mighty hard, were of the cypher and code sort which I like. (You ought to see my pages of notes, and columns of letters and numbers!)
It was also a pretty "grown up" Nancy Drew with a serious storyline. This "grown up" feel was aided by not having Bess at the end of the phone. In fact, I found Carson Drew pretty intimidating, his voice acting was that good.
I usually like Ned but, like Jenny100, I found the constant stupid texts towards the end of the game quite irritating and out of character. It was as though HER suddenly felt they had to put a few teenagery flourishes into a game that was becoming too serious and adult.
I didn't find it a very scary ND which I normally like, but in this game it didn't seem to matter.

There were a couple of odd things in the game (and I'm not sure how to phrase them without introducing spoilers and I haven't learned how to mask a spoiler). The base clef seemed to have the wrong notes - or am I incorrect in this? Also there is a poem that seems to get deciphered by itself although there are clues which appear to invite Nancy (or you and me) to try to solve it. Finally, toward the end of the game, if the procedure involving the cards is done in the wrong order you can't progress or get back. Frequent saves prevent this from being a problem.

I'm not a Scot but I found the Scottish accents were really good with just a couple of small lapses. In fact, all the voice acting was excellent.
The timed puzzles were a strain and a pain, as always. I did manage them but only with a lot of practise. And that makes them tedious rather then the joy and delight that solution of a puzzle usually brings.
But overall the game gets an A- from me.

Thanks for your thoughts on this game, meryl! I'm glad that you enjoyed it. It certainly sounds like the perfect adventure for cypher enthusiasts.

(Ned's texts drove me crazy in an earlier game, The Deadly Device. I was feeling quite violent towards him by the end.)

Thanks for your thoughts on the game, Meryl. I liked the game too. I will look forward to hearing what you think of The Shattered Medallion. thumbsup12

Could you be more specific regarding what card puzzle this is?
There was the jigsaw puzzle involving the card deck, is that it?

Hello Lady Linda,
It isn't the puzzle itself - it's the procedure to see what is on the back of the cards that precedes the puzzle. If you've done things in the wrong order, the puzzle isn't triggered, and you have to go back to a save.
I can't be more specific than that without spoiling things.
If someone could tell me how to mask a spoiler, I can be specific.

You really have me curious.

To do a spoiler type:
spoiler text
It will look like this:
Click to reveal..

Re: Nancy Drew 29 Silent Spy - 01/16/14 02:58 PM

OK. Here goes.
Click to reveal..
be sure to put the ace in the vase first, then the rest of the cards. I put the rest of the cards in first, planning to add the ace. But the pack of cards immediately reveals the backs of those cards as soon as the pack hits the water leaving you no opportunity to add the ace, and leaving you therefore with an incomplete puzzle.

The walkthrough gives you the right way round also. I had to go back a long way after doing it incorrectly as I had omitted to save frequently enough. slapped wrist for me!

OMG - you are so right.
I'm going to share this on the HeR SPY game board.

~~Added~~

The members on the HeR board posted that you are able to do to do the puzzle with the 14 pieces and then Nancy will comment about a card/piece missing and then it will let you complete it, adding what is missing.

Well, that's good to know. I thought it was very unlike a Nancy Drew game to allow you to go "wrong". I should have had more faith and just persevered.

Still, I learned how to mask a spoiler!

I got this game as a gift and it looks like a better than average nancy drew adventure so far. Your review was excellent and would have made me want to go out and buy it if I didn't have it already.
