I played Black Mirror years ago and want to play it again. I have Windows 7 and it installed fine, but when I go to open it and play, I get an error message STARFORCE error encountered message.
I know there must be a way to get around this. Can anyone PLEASE help??? Thanks so much!

I had to go get a Black Mirror NoCD, UruKat. Gameburnworld has one if you google it. Just be sure you check any of these patches you download with your AV. Mine was okay but I can't remember where I got it.

OMG.....I am so confused!
I downloaded something from Gameburnworld called Download Mirror 1 North America. Then I downloaded 7 zip, but now what do I do with it?
I'm sorry, but I don't understand this stuff. Would you be SO kind as to give me step by step instructions for getting the game to play?
I really do appreciate it so much....gameboomers is the best!

HI smile

A solution can be found here.
http://pub21.bravenet.com/forum/static/s...12&cmd=show

I experienced the same thing and doing what the person suggested in this thread helped me to play the game. As I have both the US and the UK version of the Black Mirror game, this problem you're having only really is in the US version of the game, I think as it is the only version that uses Starforce, I think. My English (UK) version of the game do not have this problem with Starforce.

[I don't know this site policies about advice how to get a legal bought game working without the disc in the drive - however I've found that this was the only method that worked for me so that I could play the game. Another is, of course, to buy the UK version of the game or the game from Good Old Games or possibly the Adventure Shop]

edit:

Good Old Games aka GOG does nat have the Black Mirror game - The adventure shop only has Black Mirror 2 and Black Mirror 3, not Black Mirror. Gamer's Gate only has Black Mirror 2. So the solution seem to be in the kink that I provided earlier.

moderators:
please feel free to edit the link if it contains info to something that is not allowed here. But as said, it has been the only thing that helped me to play the game - short of buying the UK version of the game.

edit 2:
As Traveler said you'll need to download a no cd thingie - it can be also be found at gamecopyworld. And then do what Claire said in the linked thread above. Gamecopyworld's files are .exe files. I used the English.exe to get it working.

edit 3:
If you download from GameBurnWorld, you can do a search for Black Mirror in the search box at the right side of the screen. Then choose Black Mirror, and then choose Black Mirror 1 English.exe and then you get to a rar.file which you'll need 7-zip to open.

edit 4:
Just install 7-zip like any normal program - and then rightclick the .exe file you've just downloaded, and then choose a location to where you it want it to be I find it helpfull to have such files in a folder on my desktop.

Well, thanks so much for trying to help me, but I can't understand what to do. I can't even find where the mirror download file installed to. I can't find it in order to extract it!
Thanks anyway.
I wonder if Black Mirror II will have the same problem if I buy that?

UruKat,

The download file you're talking about is the English NoCD patch for Black Mirror, right? Okay, here's what you do since it probably ended up in your temporary files and I never can find those either. Go download it again and this time Save. Instead of letting it go anywhere it wants to, browse to Desktop and put the downloaded file there.

If it's a zip file, just right click on it and select Open to find the patch.

Go to the game folder and find the .exe for the game. It may call it an 'application'. Same thing. So, it may say BlackMirror.exe. Remove that file and put it some place safe like My Documents in case you should need to put it back for any reason (not likely). Just click on the original .exe, select Cut, then go to wherever you want to save it and click Paste.

Once you've done that, take the NoCD patch from your desktop by selecting Cut or Copy (if you want to keep a copy) and then paste it in the game folder where the original .exe file was.

That should do it.

Gil.

Don't downloads go to the Downloads folder by default in Windows 7?

You've got me, Jenny. I always put downloads where I want them. Usually, unless it's a game, it's My Documents. That's cram full of assorted folders.

Jenny is correct that downloads go by default to the Downloads folder in Windows 7 in Chrome, IE and Firefox. You can always specify a default folder in your browser. But it just make sense for me to have them go to Downloads. That way I have all the downloads I want to keep in the same folder.

Urukat, just click on your Library shortcut and Downloads will be on the left. Or click on Start and then your C drive. Again, the download folder will be on your left.
