Last year I got a bunch of games (Windows 95-based space combat like Independence War, Tachyon The Fringe, etc.) that I tried to make run on my 3 GHz lapop's Windows 95/98 mode feature of my laptop's Windows XP OS, and it did nothing: These games simply would not run. Could you please help me with this? At the time (a year ago) when these games would not run in the Win 95/98 mode setting, I saw no choice but to give up and run these games on one of my older (10 years old) computer that originally had Win 98 installed in it, and the games ran fine on that PC, except Tachyon The Fringe, with I'm running in Win XP on my 1.7 GHz Dimension desktop PC, as none of these games will run on my 2005 Compaq laptop (it,too, has Win XP)

I'm not familiar with those particular games, so the following is just general info on running old Win 95 games.

Sometimes you need to disable visual themes and advanced text services on the compatibility tab.
Sometimes you need to install into the My Documents folder instead of the default location (which is usually a subfolder in Program Files) if you have XP SP2.
Sometimes updating to XP SP2 destroys files that allow compatibility mode to work properly. The patch ***here*** is supposed to fix that.
Sometimes you need to turn off unnecessary background programs, including antivirus, screensaver, anti-spyware, anti-adware, and firewall programs both before you install and while playing the game.

If these "Windows 95-based" games are actually DOS games that have been tweaked to run in Windows 95 (for example, if they expect you to configure your sound card during or shortly after the install and ask about IRQ's and such), you'll need something like VDMSound to emulate an old sound card.

DOS-based games probably work better in DOSBox.

Old games may have divide by zero errors if run on modern computers because they were designed for computers that were 1/10 or less the speed of modern computers. Sometimes a PC slowdown program will help with this. Turbo, for example.

Some older games made use of non-standard VESA modes. These may have worked for old video cards, but can cause problems with newer cards. The result is a black screen or corrupted graphics with newer cards.

Sometimes it's easier to run older games using Virtual PC with Windows 95 or 98 installed inside the virtual machine. This helps with games like Amber that simply won't run at all on NT-based operating systems (like Windows XP and 2000).

Often it's easiest just to use your old computer, if you have one.

Thanks, Jenny. I think I could use that patch you found for me. I already downloaded it and going to make a backup copy of it on a DVD. Are you sure this patch is for DOS games or Win 95 games to run in Win XP? Perhaps I could use this "DOS application" patch you found for me plus a Win 95/98 Compatibility mode patch for running Win 95/98 games in Compatibility mode in Win XP. Thanks again, Jenny.

The patch is to fix your compatibility mode if it was damaged by installing XP's SP2.
It is no good at all for DOS games in Win 95/98.
It's only for XP SP2.

You may not have memory set correctly for DOS games to run in WinXP. There are two files, autoexec.nt and config.nt, in the System32 directory that may need to be edited (or created.)

Autoexec.nt should have the line
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T3
to get sound in some games. This will only emulate the Sound Blaster 2.0 card. WinXP does not emulate the Sound Blaster 16.

Config.nt should have lines like
dos=high, umb
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
EMM = B=4000 RAM
files=100
to ensure the DOS programs can access needed memory.

Thanks, everyone! I sure could use this. Could you please tell me where I find the Config.nt & Autoexec.nt, and does it matter where I place these lines in the files? I'm only doing this because I got a screenshot capture software called "Fraps" from Beepa (after getting the sample copy of Fraps from Comic Book Creator by Planet Wide Games) am hoping to take screenshots of all my good DOS and Win 95/98 games so I can create comic books of my adventures using Comic Book Creator (Both Fraps & Comic Book Creator run on Win XP, & I'm using this on one of my other computers, my Dell Dimension 8200 which has Win XP. What I mean by "my good DOS games" are these games in which the graphics aren't too blurry (as they are in Stonekeep by Interplay)

The System32 directory that Robert was referring to is in C:\Windows. If you don't see the system32 folder in there, then click tools-->folder options-->view-->show hidden files or folders. However, it should not be hidden.

Why don't you just use printscreen to take the screenshots?
