Hi MaG,

I think there is supposed to be a manual with this game but I can't find it so I've checked your w/t a couple of times to see how some of these mini games work.

I could not get the skiing to work at all as my arrow keys just didn't do anything. I've gone past that part but if there is some secret to it, I'd be willing to go back in and try it again. Apparently that is not a necessary step to the game though.

Right now I am trying to shoot pool. I consulted the w/t for instructions. OK. Every shot I take I am getting "foul" and a negative point even on the rare occasions when I get a ball into a pocket. Why am I getting "foul"? What am I doing wrong. Your w/t says this game is necessary. Is it necessary to win or just to play? This may be a game ender.

Thanks.

According to Rushes' review of the game here on GameBoomers - assuming you downloaded the game from Steam:

Quote:
For the English language download version, there is a PDF manual inside the Steam folder in Program Files which contains further information about the game.

Also from Rushes' review:

Quote:
There are very few puzzles in Dead Mountaineer's Hotel, the game focusing rather more on dialogue. What we do have are a slew of optional mini-games: billiards, skiing, darts and cards. It is not mandatory to play or win these games, but failing to win at billiards, for example, will have an impact upon which of the four game endings you receive.

Hi Marian,

I did read Rushes' review and that's why I said there is supposed to be a manual but there doesn't seem to be anything in my Steam folder in my program files. I have a folder there but it just has a link to support and the Steam Ap. Maybe that Ap is what I'm supposed to click on? It just looks the same as my desktop icon though which just goes to my library and the Steam store etc.

I forgot that the review said that about the billiards game. MaG's w/t says the puzzle is necessary and explains how to play the game and then says "win Olga's shawl" so I assumed that meant I have to win it. Even if I don't though, I'd like to know why I keep getting "foul". I can make most of the shots now but only one time I didn't get "foul". It's frustrating me.

I am feeling like there is no way to win this game or the skiing.

Anyway, thank you for looking into this for me. At least I know I can continue the game without winning the shawl.

This game is loaded with glitches.

As for finishing the game without doing the billiards - yes - you can finish the game.
There are 4 endings to the game.
One of them depends on getting Olga's shawl.

So, you think my getting "foul" every time is a glitch not something I'm doing wrong?

I'm pretty sure the arrows not working in the skiing puzzle is. Onscreen they were constantly blinking.

Thank you. leprechaun

I think that puzzle is terrible. I cannot remember how the foul works. I know I just kept on hitting dem balls.
BTW - the best ending is the one with the shawl.

Check your e-mail. I found it in an old mail.

OK thanks MaG. I received the saved game. I'm going to play around with the puzzle a little more today. I also am not sure if I can find the saved games or not so we'll see which way I go with this.

Found the manual which doesn't say anything about the fouls.

Still haven't found any saves.

Also found videos of the different endings.

A couple of people in the Steam discussions said the same thing about getting fouls all the time. I didn't see any response to them though.

I know I'm stacking but not sure if you read above post or not. I have figured out how to not get foul. It is something I started trying out yesterday but then stopped. I have just been making easy shots. Hitting a ball into a pocket but you have to hit a ball with another ball (cue ball). Trouble is, I cannot make nearly as many shots. I managed 1 in one game and 2 in another. Still working on it.

MaG, your w/t was already correct. I just wasn't understanding it and playing the game right.

The trouble is MaG that I don't print all of the w/t's out anymore like I used to, I just save them to a word doc. I read what I need to do, go back into the game, and promptly forget half of it. lol If it's printed out and next to me I can follow it better.

I finished the game earlier today but still seemed to have a lot of pages left in the w/t. I started reading and saw that there were numerous things I had not even done, such as the generator and dancing. So I spent another 4 hours replaying from one of my saves while trying to follow the w/t. There was still one thing that did not work for me though. I used that disk thing on the spinning globe and saw the 3 x's, went to the picture of the "dead mountaineer" and clicked on the spots but could not get anything to happen. The w/t says "in inventory get photograph album". I didn't have an album in inventory, nor did I see where you say you picked it up. I did see where there was one but commented that I was not much interested in photo albums.

Oh well. I'm glad I am done with the game!

In the game that I finished (before replaying) Simone was found dead, not Olaf, and du Barnstocre was Beezlebub.

Thank you again.

Glad you finished one of the ending. laugh
Doing the picture of the dead mountaineer should have given the album. Maybe another glitch.

I actually did get to see all four endings between all the replaying.

It is worth noting that some bugs on some systems are game stopping. But there is a really simple game logic scripting system that the engine uses, through which you can fix any issues.

I looked at the code myself, and am 99.9% sure that there is no benefit to the sking, nothing changes in the minigame as you progress, and there is no change to the game if you last 1 second or 1 hour.
