It's been awhile since I played a casual game (10 years). I'm looking for recommendations for a HOPA. I'm interested in fantasy or horror/spooky themes. Any suggestions?

Did you take a peek in the Recommendations thread at the very top of this subforum? There are quite a few recommendations for best-liked HO games there.

A lot of people here really enjoyed Maze: Subject 360. I would also recommend True Fear: Forsaken Souls.

There are plenty of other good games to recommend, though, and hopefully some of our other members can offer some additional suggestions.

I should clarify a bit that I'm looking more for puzzles than hidden object scenes although I don't mind a few hidden object scenes if they are integrated as part of the game and not thrown in as a way to make the game longer. Not really keen on the 'find the morphing object' part but I can live with it if the rest of the game is very good. Having a skip puzzle button is a must. No timed sequences please. And a choice of difficulty levels is nice but not absolutely necessary.

Both of the titles I mentioned above pretty much meet your criteria.

I checked the reviews on Steam and both games have very few negative ones but I will check out your links too.

And if you are looking for a really good fantasy series, you can't do better than the Lost Lands series. There are six in the series so far, and here is the first one.

The whole series is truly outstanding.

Secrets of the Dark: Mystery of the Ancestral Estate has some good puzzles and a couple of the HOs are actually puzzles. Also Christmas Stories: Nutcracker has some good puzzles. Both have good graphics.

Hi, lspace!

Have you played any games in the "Dead Reckoning" series? Unfortunately, there won't be any more new ones, but they are murder mysteries and a nice change from the alien with glowing red/green eyes kidnaps one of your relatives and it's up to you to rescue them. I believe there are 8 games in the series, and Big Fish has all of the demos available for download on their website.

I also enjoyed the "Cadenza" series if you'd like to check them out as well.

Susan

You are welcome! The most recent one is Lost Lands: Mistakes of the Past Collector's Edition.

There is also the Darkness and Flame series (three games) by the same developer, as well as the two Legacy Games - Legacy: Forgotten Gates and Legacy: The Prisoner. They are all good. smile

Just wanted to recommend Big Fish's "Catch of the Week", Reflections of Life-Equilibrium. It's on for a few more days at a very good price.
It's one of the best games I have played in a while, (at any price), its more like an adventure game with really good puzzles and even the HO parts are very different.
