The Nativity Play

"Will Melanie wear a silver crown?
"No; and please stop jumping up and down
How can I button your coat, you toad?
We’ll leave the car and take the road.
Giselle wrinkled her nose in disgust
"It’s cold and muddy, but if we must.
~
A little church, a tiny steeple
Hardly sufficient for all the people
Dads, mums, grand pops and grannies
Coming to see their Tommie’s and Annie’s
Questionable talent but stars for a day
Appearing in this years Nativity Play
~
A jerky curtain draws across the stage
Expectant eyes through candle haze
Three bearded Shepard’s, tinselled star in the sky
A broken winged angel appears from on high
Turns to the Shepard’s, calls at them
"A Baby’s been born in Bethlehem
~
Followed by three kings carrying parcelled gifts
They leave the stage, the scenery shifts
Melanie, escorted by her reluctant swain
Josef with a giggle he can hardly contain
Mandy’s shrieking making me jump
"Daddy, Melanie’s got an enormous lump
~
I shrink from the gaze of the fearsome Ms Kite
Join the congregation singing Silent Night
The wheezy organ is played by Miss Pratt
Clad in a coat and still wearing her hat
Mistaking applause for asking for more
She played ‘Away in a Manger’ as an encore
~
Melanie, now normal cradled the child
Holy infant so meek and so mild
Crooning sweetly a soft lullaby
I swallowed deeply refusing to cry
Walking home, Mandy skipping ahead
She thought for a while then turning said
"When I’m seven could I be Mary to?
Hmm. a tricky one that, I’ll leave it to you

A true add on to the poem. Mandy was next to an elderly gentleman carrying a walking stick. She asked me about the stick and I whispered that he probably had a bad leg and he used the stick to help him walk. At the end of the service Mandy turned to the old gentleman.
"I’ll help you, hold my hand.
She led him from the pew out and down the aisle of the church.
Shaking hands with the vicar he asked me "Did you raise the little girl?
I nodded "I’m afraid so’
He smiled. "And with a little help from the Lord I think.

Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year.

Cari.
