Hi
Amongst my collection I have most of the penguin/polarware games, and was looking on ebay recently to fill some gaps. I found a copy of Pie Man with the penguin branding, which I knew was different to the one I had. I checked and mine is branded bearware. I know that penguin changed to polarware given a ruckus with the book publishing company, but could find almost nothing on bearware. The polarware website doesn't mention it, and while it shows up here it doesn't say anything about why or what it was.
The penguin branded version was released in 1982, and according to that latter site, the bearware version was published in 1987, which was around the time Merit bought polarware (1987). I wandered whether perhaps it was a re-release after the company purchase, but really have no idea. duh headscratch
I also note that my bearware copy has no publishing date, but says "copyright 1982 penguin software". Its sealed so I can't look inside for further info.
Can anyone shed any light?
think help

Interesting! It was a local publisher near my work. Now I'm curious! lol

I actually had some Penguin Software games years ago; this really takes me back.

Bearware is mentioned here in a Penguin Software subcategory, but I can't find any more information about it than that.

Me neither Marian. I am sure I read something about it on the polarware site a fair while ago but perhaps I just imagined it.
I checked Adventureland without any mention but found this at MoCAGH with respect to another Penguin game called The Quest.
"This is an unusual item in that the box is identical to the standard Penguin release, but with all references to Penguin replaced by Bearware. The manual and disk are different too but there is no indication of who or what Bearware is. It even contained a standard Polarware registration card so it can only be assumed this was some sort of late budget repackaging".
If there are more out there, someone must know! I might see if I can contact the polarware people.
