Is there a chance that after a certain amount of time the hint button turns into a skip? Otherwise, I can't think of anything else to suggest.

Are you talking about the four symbols you have to enter into the 4-digit puzzle on the wall? The order of the symbols you need should be in the little booklet that appears at the lower left when you open the puzzle. Mine started with two moons, but I don't know if the puzzle is random.

If the first symbol is correct, leave it alone.
If the first symbol is wrong, click the first digit until the symbol is correct.

If the 2nd symbol is correct, leave it alone.
If the 2nd symbol is wrong, click the 2nd digit until it's correct.

If the 3rd symbol is correct, leave it alone.
If the 3rd symbol is wrong, click the 3rd digit until it's correct.

If the 4th symbol is correct, leave it alone.
If the 4th symbol is wrong, click the 4th digit until it's correct.

By this time the first symbol will probably have changed. If the first symbol is correct, leave it alone. If the first symbol is wrong, click the first digit until the symbol is correct.

Rinse and repeat until it's solved.

The puzzle took me 4 clicks to solve. If it takes much longer than that, you can try backing out of it so it resets, hopefully to an easier configuration.

Most puzzles in this game have skips. I noticed one near the end (chapter 7 or 8) that didn't. I'm not sure if it was supposed to or not. There's a timer that counts down before the skip is available, but I suppose you know that.
