Am I the only one who hates the HO puzzle, where you have to match up shapes of objects using up and down and crossway sliders? Ugh.

I'm not sure what puzzle you're talking about, but it doesn't sound like a Hidden Object puzzle, where you find objects in a list. It sounds like a slider. If it's the type of slider where you slide entire rows or columns of tiles, I'm no good at those and get my brother to do them.

Jenny, go here and start at 3:38 for an example of this relatively new type of puzzle in HOPAs. I just played through this part yesterday so it wasn't too difficult for me to find on the video. I have seen this puzzle in other Mad Head games from the last year, and I might have seen it in another developer's game but am not positive about that.

Jenny, go here and start at 3:38 for an example of this relatively new type of puzzle in HOPAs. It looks like the type of "puzzle" that should be very easy, only they make it difficult with clumsy controls. I can't say I think much of that. I don't think I've encountered that exact puzzle type. But I haven't bought many new casual games, in part because I don't like the "innovations" on Hidden Object scenes. If not for the disadvantages of the older games (unwanted timers, Hint taking eight times as long as it should, objects too small and blurry, Hidden object scenes and nothing else) I'd play the older games exclusively.

I love variety in HO game puzzles.
I like it when I have to "struggle" with a new type of puzzle.
I read that it was good for your brain to have to cope with difficult or new games, and my brain needs all the help it can get!!!

There is a big difference between a new puzzle and an old one that's actually easy, but which they make difficult to work with because of a clumsy interface -- less than 2 seconds to solve the puzzle in your head, 20 minutes to make the slow, fiddly controls do what you want them to. Not fun. Not a mental challenge.
And here's an example of why I don't like the so called "interactive" Hidden Object puzzles:
You see you have to use something you can draw with to finish up a picture of a star. The pen doesn't work. The pencil doesn't work. The chalk doesn't work. The feather (that could be a quill) doesn't work. You're blocked from doing anything else because the star has to be finished because it's on the lid of a box, and the lid won't lift until there is a complete star on it (which makes no sense in real life, but it does in the game). Every single other object in that Hidden Object screen depends on that star being complete and your getting the object in the box to get things going.
So you finally use the Hint and find out what they wanted was a tiny round piece of charcoal next to the edge of the screen, only slightly different from the other pieces of charcoal around it, and certainly less capable of drawing a star than any of the other object you tried.
Or maybe it was the quill, but you first had to mistreat an octopus to make it squirt ink.
These things should be capable of being solved with time and patience, but with an example like the above they're really not. And no, it's nothing to do with mental exercise.

"Or maybe it was the quill, but you first had to mistreat an octopus to make it squirt ink." I'm not making it up. I actually played a game where you had to do this. Some developers have a bizarre sense of humor.
